Thoughts on a new phone...

Changing service and going with a "smart phone" Top choices are now between the Motorla Q and the Blackberry 7130e. These will be used on VZW. Thoughts on each?

if you dont use a PDA they are both overkill imo. The "Q" is nice and all but they are new and are having some hardware related issues. The crackberry has been around for a bit. If you are sold on one of these two the crackberry takes it, hands down.

Overkill maybe, but they offer EVDO, which the standard phones do not. The cost of em is also key.

Oh, I would get the Q over the BB. Check www.howardforums.com to see how people actually like the phones.

I'd check out www.phonescoop.com Those aren't the only phones that offer the EVDO though. I'm getting the lg vx9800 which has it as well as many others.

I wanted to get a Q for my next phone. They are pretty sweet. On the black berry, don't you have to talk and listen through the same hole?

don get this one:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/s...edPhoneId=2200
Verizon Wireless XV6700

it's the twin of my Cinguar 8125 and it works AWESOME. I can even use it as my internet connection at home.

If you want to play around with it let me know..i'll stop by one night.

Good thing about it is that it always has a very nice keyboard. Not the small *** buttons on the treo/motorola Q.

Also this can create/edit word/excel/powerpoint documents where the Q can only view the word/excel.

Good luck

Only thing with the 6700 is that it's a two handed phone. Very hard to use while driving...

Keep in mind that alot of the things you can do with the phone on say cingular (6700) may not be possible on verizon. What i mean is that the phone CAN do them, but verizon has a nice habit of blocking things. Thats why they have been sued ALOT in the last two years.

But all those things are hackable, because Verizon did not make the phone. UT Starcom did, and created their own firmware.

IE: Verizon on the 6700 blocked the ability to receive calls while surfing wi-fi, which forces you to buy their EVDO service if you want to receive calls. It's a quick hack in the registry to change a value from 0 to 1 (or vice-versa, can't remember) to overcome this feature.

Not missed, just continuing tradition of the audio forum going OT in every thread.

Don, if you wait a week I'll let you know how I like my new Treo.

Also, when the Q came out I went to play with it at the VZ store. The interface is great, but it feels very weird in my hand, very flat and wide. The bottom of it under the keyboard has about a 1/2 inch of space that is not being used by anything (except internal circuitry, of course), which made it look weird.

Drawback to the Q is tethering is not currently available, nor is capable of email attachments.

The buttons are also Very small and cramped together...

Not always true, which is exactly why there were more then 70 class action lawsuits against verizon in 2005 alone. Verizon doesnt make the phones but they have alot more to do with the firmware of the phone then most people realise. For example i can name 13 people off the top of my head that i know who were given free top of the line phones two months ago as a result of settlement of a class action lawsuit. That particular lawsuit was over the BT crap they tried to pull.

but, lets not stray too far =]

Same drawbacks of the Q apply to the 9800 as well.

actually mine does. I use it as a high speed connection every night. 236.0 kbps was the fastest I ever connected, 100 something kbps using the bluetooth connection...ti's even faster with the Verizon EDVO. It's pretty cool..

And yes it doens't help you with the blackberry but I think a pocket pc type phone would be better for everything.

really?? cause VZW has teh 6700 which is the same exact phone as mine. maybe with verizon's service you can't?? that's really interesting. My cousin just got the Tmobile MDA and he's using the internet from that too. let me do a little more research on that for ya...i think they're lying to ya....these things are way more powerful than a blackberry.
