n00b question about amp source wiring...

One of my friends has an 06 STi in which he had a shop install 2 12" Memphis subs in his trunk. He just bought a new double-din Alpine HU, and asked me to install it. Installing the HU is no problem, but I am worried over the source for his amp right now. I don't know if the shop simply tapped into the rear speakers, or actually used the factory HU. So IF the shop tapped into the speakers, then I'll have to run a new wire from the new HU direct to the amp right? Thanks for the help

to switch on the amp, or get the signal? im guessing you mean get the signal. run a pair of RCA's from the deck's sub-out to the amp's inputs.

OK, so signal is taken care of. But to turn on the amp, won't I have to run a new remote wire somehow to the amp too?

yes you will. run a single wire (gauge size doesn't matter, so something small) from the remote out on the deck, to the remote terminal on the amp.

However, if he already had subs and an amp hooked up, it should be floating around back in the trunk already, correct?

btw, curious: what'd he get? the IVA-W200?

Ya, he got that unit. The problem is the shop that installed the subs with an on and off switch in the back, nothing else. So I am guessing that the amps turn on everytime he starts the car?

wierd. they should have tapped a line from the stocker HU. get rid of that crap, run a single line from the HU as mentioned earlier, it will be blue, possibly blue with white tracer...

great unit btw, i will have one in the near future.

Thanks for the help, I'm hoping the shop at least did something right in the back, I will know once I see what's behind the huge *** pre-made box they used. I was totally suprised by what the shop did, judging from all the bass the woofers push, I'm guessing they installed a mono 1000W amp, and didn't even advice to changing battery, or doing a Big 3! -_-;;;

Shakeperience Audio in Bloomington, IN. The weird thing is, the other competing and leading shop in town, Landmark Mobile Custom, closed down, and their master installer went to Shakesperience. I didn't expect such an install to be done....

It is a sad day to see a Stage 2 STi and coughing to start up everyday, only to start up instantly once the amp is switched off...

The local car audio shop here has idiots working there too. I think a good shop is hard to come by.
