Ok audio newbie here. I have a '97 Maxima and currently I have some Boston Acoustic 2 way speakers at all four points with the stock tweeters. Im running an Alpine deck thats 50x4.

My speakers have almost no bass at all to them. Would replacing them with components help? Or should I just get better speakers? Would this be a worthwhile purchase if I dont get an amp to power them?

Having components will always give you better imaging than 2 or 3 way speakers. Components sound best when driven by an amplifier. Any speakers driven off the headunit, no matter what kind they are, will basically sound all the same. External amplifiers will give you better sound with good quality speakers. Most components give you mid-bass sound, since they sound much better when subs are also used within your system. To answer your question, when buying good quality speakers....they sound best when driven by an external amplifier.

 

for what he said, but also check your wiring to the speakers, pos to pos, neg to neg, when the wires get crossed what little bass you have from the HU will cancel out.

 

What kind of bass are you expecting? If you want bass that is full and loud, you need a sub. If you just want bass that is a little better than stock, get some good component speakers. When you say that your head unit is 50x4, that is max power, not rms. it probably only delivers 18x4 rms, which means you need an amp to get full potential out of your speakers.

 

not to mention boston speakers are very power hungry. i've used bostons for awhile now. but even with a badass component set, you won't get much midbass response if the install is crappy. make sure there's no gaps between the speakers mounting ring and the sheet metal of the door, etc.

At the very least, get a 4 channel amp before you get newer speakers. Good speakers can sound very poor without a dedicated amp.

 

Any suggestions on amps? Im not looking to spend a grip of cash, but I certainly dont wanna buy junk.

When buying an amp, or any other audio equipment, what really matters is how it sounds TO YOU. Beyond that, it's just a matter of features and/or reliability. I've used a couple Sony Xplod amps for about 5 years in my car with some a/d/s 336is seperates ($600/set) and I've loved the sound. Most people here probably wouldn't touch a Sony amp if you paid them. *shrug*

 

I wish someone would pay me to touch my sony amp...
