Well, since I got the new max I'm lookign to put a decent system in. I went a custom audio shop in the area (custom car sounds for anyone in STL area) and this is what we figured. Lower level eclipse HU, Kenwood 300W amp, and 2 JL10W0's. All of it installed for approximately 1k. I love the JL subs, i have a few friends with them and they're awesome. I don't know abotu the kenwood amp, the guy at the store said it would power it great but was tryign to get me to get the jl amp for 300 more... And I like that the eclipse HU is such good quality, but man, their lower level HU looks like sh*t compared to some of the others... And the next level up is another 150. What do you guys think of the setup with my four stock 6.5" and two tweeters... And also, even $1000 is too high for me, i might try and bring them down a bit. Thanks.

On the Eclipse you are paying for sound quality. Not the dancing lights, dancing dolphins, etc on the screen. I have the Eclipse in my Max and it is the best sounding cd player on the market. Try and look at the 5442I. It has a sub out wirelss remote and so on. I sell it over here at Tweeter for $279.99. I also have the JL amps in my car and they are the best amps on the market compared to everyone else. Are they trying to sell you the Eclipse 54400? Other than that it sounds like they have a pretty good system for you.

ya, i liked the JL amps a lot, and they said that they were the best ones they had, but they're so expensive, and i'm going to college this fall so i need to spend thrifty. And i like paying for sound quality on the eclipse, but I don't want it to bring down the look of my brand new car's interior. But which eclipse do you suggest i get for bargain shopping, and also, you seem like you sell for cheaper than this store...

BTW, with your 5% tint how is your visibility at both day and nioght?

Hey, don't knock the dancing dolphins. That's the only animation I've got on my Kenwood X717...

Just so you know, Jls sound nice but if you over power them at all, they break. Ive had 4 different friends having w0s to w6s and ive all of them have had some problem, either the vcs blew, or the dustcap falls off. One of my friends even had the magnet fall off

I was only planning on running either a 300W kenwood or JL amp to them so it shouldn't overpower them at all. But the system might be put on hold, buttload of new expenses came down the tube and the money saved is up and vanishing like a fart in the wind...

Wow!!! I think your friends got some way screwed up speakers there. I have always used JL's, overpowered and all and I have had no problems. My new setup is only a month old and I am overpowering my 10W3's with no sign of failure. Before these 10W3's that I have now, I had a 10W0 in a sealed box for close to 3 years with again absolutely no problems.

My friend had an old 12W4 in a bandpass box for close to 5 years and he had no problems with it ever. Before that he had 3 10W0's and again no problem for a year or 2. Even before that he had 2 10W0's that now reside in my g/f's trunk and neither he or she had problems with those. I'm not saying that JL doesn't have it's problems, but if you bought these subs from a dealer and something happens to them, simply take them back and the dealer will ship them to JL and you'll get new subs.

JL's are great subs, however, Kicker Solobaric L7 in the right box is the absolute best sub on the market. You want massive bass while savering sound quality, the new square Solobarics are definetly the way to go.

Couple of things......

First off....I have never, ever heard of someone's JL w6s falling apart, and you would be very, and I do mean, VERY hard-pressed to over-power a w6. I have almost twice the recoomended RMS wattage going into my w6's and have had this setup for two years now, with no signs of faltering anytime soon. Power seldom blows speakers, in fact 9 out of 10 speakers that someone claims they blew from too much power is really due to distortion. Distortion deforms the spider and causes heat build up in the voice coil, which, in turn fries the speaker. I worked at a car stereo company, and in all the time I worked there, every JL sub that was blown was due to someone trying to push it too hard with their amp. This means they wanted more than their amp was able to give them, and they subsequently would end up frying their speakers and their amp.

Second Point:
Renn-I'm going to disagree with you on your assertion that L7s are a good compromise between power and Sound Quality. For one, they are a square speaker, so they do not reproduce sound well. They are inefficient and require too much power to be worth what you get from them. They are best suited in a ported enclosure, and this too is not optimal for SQ. Not to pick on you, or to say that they do not have their place, but SQ is not their strong suit. The old Solobarics, yes, but no these. And I have nothing against Kicker, in fact I have all Kicker amps. ( zr 120, zr 240, zr 600) Just my experience, and my two cents.

-Lee DeVine

Oh yeah, sorry if that came across as me telling you that you were wrong, Renn, just a difference in opinions.......I guess the only real test will be to see how many IASCA cars win SQ competitions with the L7.
