Need a 12v Source

I figured I'd post this here, for all of you who are wiring gurus. I need a 12v source that will come on with the key in the ON position. I cannot use the cig. lighter because just recently it started to not get 12v. I don't know why. If you can explain that, that would be even better. I would love to use it, but I can't because it doesn't get 12v anymore (I traced it clear back to it's wiring harness, and it doesn't have 12v anywhere).

Another source I was using is too weak to power my RPM switch on top of it's current function, so I need a separate source. Thanks in advance!

have you tried tapping into a fuse in your fuse box? You would have to grab a test light and test to see which one comes one with the key on.

Which fuse box we talking about? I never would have thought that to be safe, really. I was also kind of hoping not to have to run yet ANOTHER wire into my engine bay. I have a ton going through the firewall as it is.

maybe tap one of the radio wires for the ignition?
Also check the fuse for your cig. socket...maybe it's blown.

I did it on my maxima. I tested every fuse under the dash to see which one would come on with the ignition on. Once i found it i tapped into. It's only powering up my af gauge and shift light, so it's not much draw. No problems so far.

Radio wires. Hmm. The RPM switch doesn't need much power, I don't think. I will check the fuse later, that's a good idea too.

All good ideas.

you need to tap an ignition wire. look in the stickies of this forum on how to install a remote starter in a 4th Gen... it'll tell you what color (i forget), its underneath the steering wheel, you need to take your dash apart.

or, if you have a test light, you can grab the ign wire from behind your radio.

make sure you use an inline fuse holder if you go this route... it's a safety issue. ie: your thin wire shorts out but doesn't have enough current to blow the ignition fuse... hello 4th of july inside the car

I just ended up replacing the fuse for the cig. lighter and everything is alright now

Still glad I got this thread going, though. I may need other 12v sources soon for other things, and I don't want to burden the cig. lighter again.
