Alpine Shoot-Out

OK, I'm about to get ready to redo the audio in my 98 max. I've pretty much settled on going everything Alpine. Here are the stats
Head Unit: IVA-W200 Amp: PDX-4.150 Sub: PLV-7

The problem that I'm having is that I can't figure out which speakers to get...
Type-R - SPR-17S or Type-X - SPX-177R

Which speakers do you think are best?? I know that sometimes just because they cost more doesn't mean they perform better. Any opinions, comments, questions are greatly appreciated!!!

type x are quite nice, but for the price, mmm not worth it. for a mere few hundred more (probably less) you could get Rainbow Germaniums and would be much happier.

with 150 watts per channel, you're at least going to want to go with Type X comps...

the retail price alone on that thing makes me cry...only viable things are the amps he posted IMO.

definately something that wasn't designed for single and extra cab trucks. for $500, you could get a really decent single 12 and a box that will be louder and sound just as good as the PLV series from alpine.

heres the link to the germainums:

http://car.rainbow-audio.de/products...2&pro=1&lin=17

you can get them from none other than Don, Pearl96Max.

slick, i think the W200 is a decent choice, if thats all he's looking for. though if i had that kind of dough right now Id prolly buy an Eclipse Navi unit, as they're constantly up for sale here on the org..

Also, DigitalAlc, those PDX's are fantastic amps, but they're reallllly pricy. unless you can get them for a great price (and unless you really want them for the size), I'd suggest going with something like a mid-lined Arc amp (xxk series), they're a bit cheaper and are some of the cleanest amps you can buy...

yeah for the price the Alpine is not a "bad" deal...give us a budget for a sub and box combo.

ok for the record, im using the bonus money from my job to get this done. I'm looking at between $3000-$4000. I'm redoing the exhaust from the Y-Pipe back. Thats gonna run about $1000. So the rest is going to the A/V. I found a spot that will do the work for about $200-250. So the rest is going to buying the stuff. I was going to get just a CD H/U, but I don't like the way the 1-din H/U that came with the car looks so im going for a 2-din DVD H/U [would be nice if i found what that handles DIVX ). My last car I learned the lesson of not having an AMP, so I'm not making the same mistake twice. I'm going more for SQ, cause I want to have a switch hooked to the sub so can turn it on and off...2 reasons 1. sound sensitive passengers (parental), 2. when some @$$hole drowns out my car with nothing but bass, I can hit a switch and shut him the **** up. If I don't go for the Alpine Box, it would probably be between 2xJL 12W7's or 2XMA Audio HK120XC. ive heard both.

Ohh I just thought about it. The rear deck should I get components or co-axial. I'm never really found out what would fit back there.

ok let's say that I go with the germaniums front and back. the amp is putting out 150w RMS. the site says that the speakers have a max rating of 150w. Wouldn't I be pressing my luck going with a amp that puts out max wattage of the speaker???

...but it does allow you to go for a lower powered amp, although i wouldnt go below 100 rms. thats a pretty common wattage and for the price you could get a really nice 100x4 amp, although there isnt really anything wrong with your choice.. just better matches maybe. look into arc audio and other at that level. you definately wont regret it

The Germs can easily take that power. Mine are getting 120 per side and it can get too loud for my tastes.

I have an all Alpine system and love it. I wanted to keep everything the same series (I don't like brand clashing, LOL) so I went with type S speakers and V-power amps. I have had every kind of Alpine product, even the infamous Alpine 7909J (stolen). Now I am running the follwing:

HU:
-IVA-W200
Amps:
-MRP-F350 Digital Theater 5.1
-2X MRP-M350 Mono amps
Speakers:
-2 pair of 6 1/2 Types-S Component Speakers
-Alpine 1 DIN center Channel speaker
-2007 Type S 10" subs (the new black ones)

And other Alpine stuff but that is the meat of it.

I wanted to go with something simple but flashy and not expensive. Everything brand new cost me $2000. Let me know if you need a hook up. I'll post pics when I get a chance (pics on cardomain are outdated). I love the 5.1 surround, i'll never go back to stereo. I love the type-X series, had them also and they sound great. You have a great selection but it is pricey, any who good luck with your set up.

Also just a side note, wattage does not kill speakers, frequency does. Anyway the factory tests their amps at full gain, I hope you aren't. More wattage is better than less wattage, more room for tuning. My 2 cents.

overpowering a speaker can kill it if you exceed the coil's thermal capacity.

I love my W200. Good choice, no regrets. I also have the 701 processor. Sounds wonderful and is both easy and flexible to setup. I have a/d/s speakers myself.

This is my review of my setup currently
I have a Alpine 9857
2 comp 6.5 Type R's in the front
a Alpine PDX 400.4 bridged to the Type R's
and a Phoenix Gold Titanium 600.2 Bridged to a PG 12" Zenon sub

The Type R's I have NOT been happy with, the tweeters blew after a week, after 7months I just sent a Type R woofer back cause it was distorting, and please dont buy the PDX its a class D and not that powerful. I wish I would never have bought the Type Rs and the PDX but they were on sale and I bought them in haste.
Just a note the PG stuff I have has been Fuakin amazing beyond dreams, had it for 3years pounding it and NO problems or changes. Also the HU has been great(Alpine lol) Low Pre amp and no time correction sucks (new HU's)
p.s. all my Alpine stuff is hooked up perfectly for those of you who may ask.

......

ok your sig says you have a PDX 450.4, which doesn't exist, and you just said you hada 400.4, which doesnt exist either. do you have the 150.4???

why did you bridge the amp to the comps?? thats probably why you blew your tweeters. at 300 watts per side on a set of comps that reccomend 150w, im surprised they lasted you any length of time. the PDX series are great amps, you more than likely just had them tuned improperly, among other obvious things.

and just about everyone on the planet will agree, upper-end Alpine > newer PG crap.

I think you mean distortion, not frequency.....that's what X-overs are for.

No I mean frequency... If you put too high or too low frequency to certain speakers, then the speakers will distort! Tests have been done with high end amps that push 1000 watts to a tiny tweeter and it never blew b/c it was only getting sent the correct frequncies.

ok, ok please no more alpine bashing. i definitely appreciate the opinions. i understand that they are NOT the best speaker out there i can accept that. I'm not looking to win any SQ awards, but I listen to a large variety of music. and want something that will reproduce it. So far here is what I've learned...

1. The current the reigning champ as far as speakers go are the Rainbows. Unfortunately I (currently) don't have the funds to allow such a purchase. Maybe later.
2. I was originally thinking about going with a component setup all the way around, but after reading, that its pretty much worthless im going to go with components in the front and coaxial in the rear .
3. Capacitors are a waste. Ive read that not just from this site but from a couple other one's as well. I would be better off upgrading the battery and alternator then buying a capacitor.
4. Different things can blow a speaker. Too much power, frequencies that cause distortion. Hell low quality music can kill a speaker.
5. Never let the HU power the speakers. They just don't put out the power necessary to power speakers except the ones that probably came with the car.
6. 1/3 sub-2/3 box. You can have a $1000 sub that sounds like crap if its in a box that wasn't designed for it.

I'm learning as I go along. 2 quick questions. Has anyone heard anything about the DDX8019 from kenwood? It's supposed to be coming out the beginning of next month. Also does any1 know any places in the baltimore area where I can listen to some of the more high-end speakers? I happened to be in best buy, and what they had just didn't cut it. I want to listen before I make a definite decision

well.. for speakers that wont hurt your budegt too much but are a prettu good reproduction id recommend A/D/S/ as far as the HU it seems like an alright product but i just think alpine or eclipse HU's are some of the better ones.
