Advice on basic audio wiring please!

hey guys,

This is a very general audio question.. The car Im working on is a 1987 Honda prelude, but that is irrelevant.

Im in the process of restoring it--there was a leak into the cabin from the windshield, so I had to rip out all the carpeting, fix the leak.. etc... the carpeting was all nasty and wet for years probably. There are rust holes which have to be repaired..rust bullet to be applied.. etc

My question is this.

While I have all the carpeting up.. I want to run cable/wire from the front head unit to the trunk for any future upgrades in speakers,amps/tubes/subs etc. I dont know which cabling or wire to buy b/c I havent a clue as to what Im going to do! I figure that while the carpeting is out, its the best time to run all this stuff!

I know ZERO about car audio.

Do speakers, bass tubes, subs, amps, all take the same wiring/cabling? What and how much should I wire? What do I buy?

Thanks!!

You need a power wire, a remote wire and a ground. The ground can be done at any time as it should be short and can be done in the trunk on bare metal.

I would go ahead and run a 4 gauge power wire (or 1/0 if you think you may go with multiple amps) from the battery with a fuse at the battery to the trunk. You can leave the fuse out till you hook it up to the amp.

Agreed. Signal cable as well as speaker wire can also be done now.

I am currently preparing a setup with a 4 channel amp, subwoofer amp, 4 door speakers, and a subwoofer box in the trunk. The wiring I will be running to the trunk is as follows: 1 Fused 4 Gauge power wire from battery all the way to the trunk. A distribution block can be used later in case you want to add more than one amp in the trunk. The power wire will be run on the driver's side of the car. On the passenger side, I will be running a 4 channel RCA bundle for a four channel amp, and seperately either a dual RCA or single RCA for use with a subwoofer amp. Then I will be running speaker wire from the trunk to the speakers inside the car. You will also need the remote turn on wire for your amps. If you are not sure what you will be installing, I would run those wires while you have it taken apart. Everything else can be added later.

My setup will have 4 door speakers, and a subwoofer in the trunk with a mono subwoofer amp and a four channel amp for the door speakers. I will be using a 600W RMS amp for the sub and a 400W RMS (100x4) amp for the door speakers. The details for the wiring kit I am using are at this link: http://www.tsunamionline.com/product.php?id=532
