Remote wiring audio controls?

Alrighty. I have a remote to my headunit(yeah, a remote...) and I was thinking about disassembling it, and wiring some normal SPST pushbotton switches on it. Then, I would try to make, or mod a steering wheel audio control mount. I might see if I can find one off of another car that would work. Has anyone done something like this? I am also thinking about applying this idea to somewhere in the back seat, so you can control the audio from there. Any ideas or suggestions?

Its a clarion. Its old, but its nice. It has the remote, but doesnt have steering wheel controls(Ive got a 4th gen GXE, so I dont have them stock either). I think I am going to add it to the rear seat, not the steering wheel. I dont really need it on the steering wheel...
