new radio and ground loop noise ?

Hi,
I just installed a new pioneer radio. I had a couple years old sony in there that was installed by the previous owner. The old radio was going bad so bought a new DEH-P780MP. Now I have the ignition/idle noise throught the speakers. I tried to isolate it yesterday to see what it could be but had no luck. I did run into something weird with the antenna. But first here is the setup. The deck is connected to the stock wiring using a connection harness. I hooked up the red ACC wire, the yellow BAT wire and the blue ANT/AMP wire. Yesterday I ran a ground wire all the way to the battery. Before that I had it going to the metal frame that supports the radio and AC?Heater controls. The rest of the wires I capped off. I have three sets of RCAs running to two amps in the trunk. Power wires are on the left and RCAs are on the right going to the amps.
So now for the antenna question. When I unhook it, the radio makes a loud distorted noise, even when playing a CD. Is the radio getting grounded throught the antenna? Why? Tonight I am going to try to run a seperate set of RCAs over the seats to one of the maps to see if anything changes. But I would appreceate any help or sugestions you guys have. Thanks,

John

Hey there John, I think one of the main things the pros will tell you is to have a proper ground setup. A short run to the actual frame of the car is the best thing (at last from what I've read and have been told). You'll want to grind/sand down the paint from the frame to expose the bare metal and use that point as your grounding point. They will most likely tell you to use that single point for all of your grounds for your various pieces of audio/video equipment.

Hope that helps, and hopefully the other experienced posters will speak up.

Good luck.

Hopefully not the case, but you may have a faulty headunit with bad pre-outs.....

Thanks for the reply. I did try running a wire straight from the battery ground to the radio and also to one of the amps. I had the wires draped outside the car just to test things and it did not make a difference. I even did a wire straight from the power of the battery to the radio and no difference.

I am wondering if that is the case. If running the extra RCAs to the amps does not work I will try to hook up a pair of speaker stright to the deck bypassing the external amps and see if I get the noise. If there is no noise that it has to be the pre-outs.

Yea right. Thats why I try not to 'touch' them...

Because that would only serve the greater good, not put more money into their pockets.

Well tried everything and still ground noise. I did hook up the speaker just throught the deck and there was no noise. So the RCA output out of the deck is bad. I will try to contact Pioneer to see if they have a fix or what they recommend. I will keep you guys posted.

Yes, tried that also and yes I bought it at authorized dealer. I emailed Pioneer and they emailed me back to call them. I will do that after work and see what happens.

Fixed It

Well finally fixed it. To make a long story short I shielded the RCA pigtail. One of the guys at work just said put some tin foil around it, so I did. Actually I wrapped the whole pigtail connected to my RCA cords in tinfoil. I than stripped a 16 AWG wire about a foot and wrapped it around the tinfoil to act as a drain wire. I than hooked this wire up to the case of the radio. I than wrapped the whole thing in electrical tape nice and tight. NO MORE NOISE! For some reason the connections on the pigtail were picking up noise. I turned the radio all the way down and reved the car just to make sure and it was quite. I want to say thanks to all who gave me ideas here.

The ones to the 4 channel amp are Stinger and the 2 channel (subs) is I think street wires. I do like the Stinger because it has four leads in one cable. But they were quiet with the previous deck.
