ok, there is this guy near me selling his system. its been out of his car so i havent heard it so tell me if i should buy.

1 JL 10w6 10 inch DVC sub $60

1 orion CS cobalt series 150.2 amp 300 watts RMS $50

at first, he offered me $125 for the sub and $100 for the amp, but something went wrong and he needs cash tomorrow by noon. so should i buy? if i do buy, what kind of box do i get for it? and will it kick hard or should i get one more of the same sub and amp? tell me what you think, thanks!

I think you should go for it...I have heard those subs do real well and that is a great price depending on the condition of the amp.

The w6 series have been known to have weak surrounds. They can warp/tear/whatever after a year or so.. the w3's usually last forever.

The Cobalt amp is orions entry level amp. I'm not saying its bad, but if you're buying for the name, just know that the name is Orion Xtreme or HCCA

I think that you MAYBE buy the sub, and the amp is a decent deal. Do you have any way of testing the amp? I really doubt 1 10w6 could "kick hard" .. but itll be well balanced, if you decide to buy the set. The prices arent bad.

I haven't ever seen a W6 fall apart. They are at least as durable as any other sub. And they will "kick hard". That Orion amp is only 2-ohm stable and can't safely and reliably push that sub, so I would recommend getting the sub and then getting a different amp to drive it.

Theres a thread about it on SoundDomain.. as for kicking hard, my gf has 2 JL 10's in her car, theyre only w1 tho.. but theyre takin about 400-450w .. they hit pretty loud, but they dont go low nuff. Its nuff to make her whole car rattle, and all that.. but i dont consider that kicking hard.. thats all opinion anyways

The answer.

I'll sum it up at the beginning and then explain further down. I say go for it. That is an AWESOME price on the sub and the amp will be okay - the price seems right.

Now, as for JL Audio . . . I had the surrounds rip on my 3 8W6's from years ago . . . ___3_times___!!! However, I have never seen the same thing on the 10W6. Also, one 10W6 will kick pretty hard if you want it to and you put it in the right box (sealed from .5 cubes to 1.0 cube). Not with that amp tho. So expect decent sound as long as the sub isn't bad. To find out if the sub is bad, push on the cone evenly and make sure it isn't a "soft" suspension. Kinda like cars. You want to feel force when pushing on the cone. Also, tap on the side of the cone and see if you hear a knocking sound. Tap kind of hard (not THAT hard Hulk) in between the surround and the dust cap all the way around the speaker. If you hear nothing, you're golden.

The amp can push that sub. Wiring the sub in series will yield a 3 ohm mono load and the amp should be fine. Back in the diz-zay I had 3 8W1's in series on a Kenwood KAC-923 - that's 1.33 ohms mono (on an amp that wasn't even rated for 2 ohms mono) and the amp lived to see another owner.

Good luck.

Good luck.

yeah, thats what i thought. how bout this... since the amp isnt anything great for subs how about i use it for my 4 interior speakers? the amp i 2x150 so would i go the the left and right or the front and rear? is it too risky to send that much power to interior speakers? i really have no background knowledge about amps/speakrs/etc. so if you have time, can you help me on AIM or something or are they any good websites that will teach me this stuff? thanks

1000W?? Okay kids, do all of us a favor and don't post when you don't know what you are talking about. 300W would certainly push two low end orion 15" subs. If they are higher end subs, you could probably get away with 500W. When a sub says 500W RMS, that just means that's what they CAN handle in ideal conditions, not necessarily what will make them sound good. A 500W RMS sub would sound good with 250-300W.

All that said, would it be smart to buy 2 low end 15's? Not so much. You'd be better off getting a nice 12" sub. If you want SLAMMING sound, get yourself something along the lines of an Infinity Perfect 12 or a Soundstream SPL12. If you want something more musical, get a JL 12W1 or a 12W6 (if you have the money), an Image Dynamics IDQ12, or even my personal fav. - the Infinity Beta line of subs. Infinity Betas can be found on eBay for cheap because no one knows what they are. (Thus the reason I refuse to sell mine on eBay - I paid like $220 each for mine and they are only fetching $60 a piece on eBay)
