Sealed or Ported for JL 12w3d2?

Right now I have an MTX bandpass box, and it doesn't sound all that great with my sub. What type of enclosure should I look for? I mostly listen to trance, fast paced low beats, and sometimes rap. The bandpass is ok for rap but for trance it's not so good. Any suggestions?

Bass sounds sort of distorted as well in the box... Of course the video won't do much justice, but you'll get somewhat of an idea of the sound. The bass doesn't seem low enough, but rather high pitched.

You can go ported with a W3 and it'll still sound decent. Try to have a shop build you a box instead of using a prefrab (if it's not a JL prefab). But it's really your preference. You'll have a quicker response in a sealed box, but with a properly ported box, you wouldn't notice that much of a difference.

Take that sub in a 1.75 cu ft box ported to 30 - 33 hz and you should be very happy with the result.

Do a sealed box because if you listen to trance and techno, you dont want your bass to be real boomy. Also get a person who has dealt with JL to make the box because they have specs on the dimensions of the exact box for your needs!

Won't be boomy if it's tuned LOW.

This is true for all subs...not just JL. Any good shop should be able to help him out, wether or not they deal with JL is a non issue.

So if you tune the box low the sub wont be boomy, but what about all of the missing band that is used for techno or trance, the 40 to 50 hz band if you are tuning the box to sound best at 33hz then you really are eliminating the actual sound of the music. I had a jl w3 in a ported box and it sounded horrible when I listen to Scribbles MDMA cd. It was tuned at 38hz and I switched to a sealed box and that cd was awesome. All I am saying is a ported box wont give you the response your are looking for with the punchey bass that trance offers.

JPIZZLE, your box was tuned very high for most people. A properly build ported enclosure will dominate in this and most situations. The driver has a lot to do with it as well. The W3v2 will sound great ported if done correctly.

A box that is tuned to optimize the drivers output at a low frequency does not necessarily cut out or reduce the output at 40 or 50 or 80Hz for that matter. There are some SQ guys that run there subs all the way up to 100Hz and are tuned low.

Take my box for instance. It is 4.25 total cf and tuned to 32Hz. After sub and port displacement it is at 3.8cf. I have it crossed over at 80Hz. There are several people here that can attest to it's output as well as it's linearity.

To the OP, def port it. I listen to a ton of Techno, actually listening to Baby Anne right now. Now all you have to do is find someone that can build a good ported enclosure.

Quicker response? How so?
