Fi Bl 15 Ported box

So im about to build my first ported box and i need a little help. My 15" bl will be getting 2000 watts and has cooling and flatwind options. My goal is to have the best LSQ setup as possible leaning more towards spl. I think i want to tune ~35.

If the box is 4 cubes with the tuning at 35, is a port size of 4W x 13h x 21.8L correct? Is that enough port area? And is that a good tuning for my goal?

Also if i use 2 circular ports that are 4" in diameter and 10.5 inches long would that be enough port area and the right tuning?

Thanks a lot -Rick

i would tune a little lower...like 30-32 hz. you might find 35 a little peaky if you're aiming for a little SQ out of that box. port area, i would go for at least 45 sq inch, with a 3" port width. i personally would go for at least 62 sq inch for that sub...4" wide, 15.5" high if your box was 17" overall height. it's a beast and will move quite a bit of air.

I really appreciate your help. And this is my first time having a non prefab box. My last box was this http://cgi.ebay.com/15-CUSTOM-PORTED...QQcmdZViewItem because it was the best prefab i could find. I was very unimpressed with how it sounded and now have some tools to build a box. I just want to make sure it sounds better than that box. I was debating going with a lower tuning ~32. But really don't want to lose too much spl. Im kind of on the fence about the tuning.

i think 32 hz is nice. i heard a 15" adire audio brahma mk2 in a 4 cube box tune to 32 hz...it was insanely loud in the car.

well, if you used a 4" wide port, that's 15.5" tall, you need to make the total length 34.11" inches or so to get a 32 hz tune. also, this will displace ~1.42 cu ft, so you need to add this on TOP of the 4 cubes of sub airspace. so gross volume of the box needs to be around 5.42 if you're going to go this route.

Definitely sounds good but the thing is that im trying to keep the total height of the box at 15.5 because that is as small as i can get away with but will still barely clear the trunk tension bars. I didnt like how that ebay box sat so close to the back trunk lid and wanted to be able to push this one more towards the back seat. Also it was a major PITA to get that box into the trunk due to its height. Would it be a problem to use a 14" tall by 4 " wide port that is 30 inches long? Thats about 32hz and 56" of port area.

how are you going to mount the sub? the cutout for a 15 needs to be like 14". 15.5 is the max height you want to go with?

Unless im being dumb what I was thinking was if i go 15.5 i would be good for a 14" cut. 15.5-1.5 (.75" MDF) is 14. I know its going to be tight but i thought id be ok. If you think it wont work let me know. And btw im going to check before i make any cuts just to be sure.

How the hell car you going to fit 4 cubes in your trunk....

Thats huge

I have 3 cubes right now and I can't put **** in my trunk.

I think my height is around that 15.5 -16 in.
Just make sure when your cutting the subcut out that you don't break the MDF when your near the egde....

i think those ports might choke the sub no? four 3" aero's would give you ~28.3 sq in of port area...

yup, circular ports are easier to build than slot ports. i'm using two 4" aeros in my current box, and it's really choking the sub.

drew up a design a few nights ago...let's see when i'll get off my lazy **** to build it.

plan calls for 3.5 net tuned to 30 hz, with a 4" wide port, 15.5" tall. i'm just curious on how loud my sub can get...then i'll prolly sell the box locally and reuse my current one.

Picked up the wood and the construction is going to happen tomorrow. It will be 4.0 cubes net tuned to 32hz with 63 inches of port area. Thanks to everyone that helped. Im so happy that my systems almost complete.

if you got some MDF left over, make a 45* piece and put it in that first corner in the port. it'll help with the airflow.

looks good!

I tried putting one in, you can see at the top right of the face. It split the wood a bit so i just used liquid nail and clamps. The box is definitely strong enough without screws though.

always predrill if you're going to use screws. it'll reduce the chances of splitting the wood. i use a nail gun...much faster.

Screws aren't 100% necessary. I use them mainly to hold the box together while the glue dries. A nail gun would work also. Take a belt sander to the pieces that aren't even. It will help with the carpet, assuming you are doing carpet. I can't wait to see it finished.

Great job on your first box build!

Ohhhh I know that the glue is what is holding the box together, I am just saying, people who I have sseen make boxes usually do use screws to hold it together while the glue dries, I know for sure that, thats what I have done to my box

I always do as well. It feels wrong to do it any other way for me too. I feel wrong using a nail gun too.

Here's a little update as to how my project is going. Got the first layer of paint on the box. And i'm currently making my mdf rings for my doors. New amps come in tomorrow, and everything should be done by Saturday.

Lastly i was looking for the wrench that is stuck to the magnet of the sub for a good 15 minutes. And just saw it on the pics as i was uploading.
