Prevolt Question

I don't get it.

I have this HU
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-g4OtbRk...p?I=500CDA9827

Its 4v, and yet my gain is set to about 75%.

My friend had the same amp as me but an Eclipse HU and he had it set to like 25% or something really low.

Any idea?

BTW amp is a Profile 1000M.
My friend and I were both using the same sub (Atlas 15)

Measure your voltage, plus you can't really compare different cars/setups because he has a different deck, it doesn't take a brainiac to figure out it might have better/stronger higher voltage outs than your alpine.

a lot of eclipse HUs have 5v or 8v preouts, and settings on each HU make a difference as well. Same with the install, specifically the box each sub is in.

and are you talking about volume or 'loudness'? i had to guess at what you were asking from your post..

Prevolt output is similar to amplifier output. 4V are not all the same and that 4V rating is usually the maximum. A 45x4W max pioneer hu amp might not be the same as a sony 45x4W hu amp. Another number related to preout which is also important but often forgotten is impedance.

Fyi, I think the Alpine is rated at 100ohm and the eclipse is at 55 ohm in terms of voltage.

well
we had the same exact setup. same box same sub, same amp.

the only thing different was the hu, and cables. and loudness was the same. but my question is strickly on the level on the gain

Get a eclipse deck with 8v out then you'll have your gain at 1/8 and be louder than him.

My gains are only set to about 25% as well, nothing wrong with that.

What volume are you setting the gain at? Most HUs will put out the rated voltage at like past 3/4 volume...

maybe not exactly 4v.. but the point is after a certain volume the preout increases significantly.. and at that point is where you should set gain.. usually more than 3/4 vol.

Not true, with very little volume my pre-outs tested only 1 v +- the rated. (on my 880prs).
