I have a radar detector mounted on my windshield and currently operating from the lighter. I was wonder if I could tap directly at some 12V somewhere next to the windshield. I am trying to get rid of that wire that coild on my dashboard. I would like some direction on how to do this project. Any suggestion on how to bypass this stupid cigarette lighter?
Thanks.

What Gen is your Max? In my 5th Gen I was able to tap into the power that feeds the clock/security cluster in the center - VERY EASY.

Let me know if I can help...I even have decent photos!

I have my radar detector in my 94 GXE mounted in th eupper left corner of the windshield (by the driver's visor). It is hidden behind the tint. I ran the wire behind the A pillar panel and into the fuse box under the dash. I tapped into the fuse for my cigarette lighter by wrapping some of the bare wire around the fuse and sticking the fuse back into the fuse box. It has never blown. I haven't had any problems. By doing it this way, it will hide the wire and the radar detector will turn on when the car turns on and it will turn off when the car turns off. Plus, its location will make it easy to turn it off and hide it from view.

Problem solved. Hope this helps.

map light

i have mine tapped into the map light next to my sunroof, the only problem is you have to remember to turn the detector on and off. i will find a new spot later and in this spot the detector is virtually invisible from the outside.

I actually want to make the wire pass behind the dashboard and connectit somewhere behind the console. If anyone knows an access point or has done something similar, that would be a good input. I just want to do away with any wire in the way or avoid awkward settings where the wire is all over the place..

It doesn't matter about the difference between a 4th Gen and a 3rg gen. You could do it the same way I did mine. If you want to keep it mounted in the center of the windshield, you can run the wire behind the dashboard and hook it up the same way I did. Look around, you'll find somewhere to put the wire.
