Just put some of the new infinity kappa 4's and 6x9's and a perfect 12.1 sub in my max, and god dammit they are sweet. They're reasonably priced too. I got mine at sounddomain.com, paid $80 for the 4's and 150 for the 6x9's (vs. $120 and $250 at crutchfield for the same spks). I got the sub elsewhere, but I think they sell it for around $160-ish.
The system is well-balanced and squeaky clean at any volume. The highs always manage to keep up, but without being too bright, like the mb quart's i was considering as an alternative. If you're looking for some reasonably priced speakers that will feed you some serious SPL without giving up clarity, definitely check these out.

Yeah, the fit was tricky on my 3rd-gen bose. There was a big gap between the factory mounting plate and the speaker, so I had to make some baffles out of 1/2" MDF. For the front speakers, I had to cut the basket and magnet off the factory speaker, then shave off the mounting tabs on the infinitys to mount them on top of the outer surface of the factory speaker. Replacing the speakers took about seven hundred times more effort than it should have, but it sounds good, so I'm not too bitter.
I own the Infinity Kappa 2-way 6x9s, the bass is not nearly what I had expected. Infinitys speakers have a weak bass part to them, compared to say some Kenwood and Sony speakers I have heard. Their mid-s and highs are nice, but they can get sharp sometimes. Maybe this is not so with the 3-ways?

If you get one, give it plenty of power. I'm feeding mine 300 clean watts, and it performs well, but I tried it with a 200W amp, just to see what it would do, and it wasn't really enough. Infinity rates it at 350, but I've heard from quite a few people who run these things at 500-600 watts and get really solid performance out of them.
