Questions about very thin wires

This is a wiring question which pertains specifically to headlights, but I figured you audio junkies should know your wiring fairly well.

Recently I installed the 02-03 HID headlights. I spliced the wires into the existing halogen headlight wires. I noticed that the "power" wire only had 3 (count 'em, 3) copper strands in it!

I've been reading up on projectors and HID systems in general, and have grown concerned about my wiring. I know that relays are the safest route, but if the incoming wire only has 3 copper strands in it, then what good does a relay do? The same amount of power still travels through that wire no matter how I configure my circuitry, correct?

Is this something to be concerned about?

A relay only takes that initial wire for a trigger/signal. You run a new wire from the battery to it for power.
