$25 ipod car adapter

Hi guys,

I just found this today from slickdeals.net, but thought some people here might be interesetd as well.

The Harmon Kardon DP1US Drive+Play iPod Car Kit System w/LCD Display is on sale for $20 plus $5 shipping. It can control your ipod and comes with small lcd screen that you can mount.

I probably won't do the screen in mine for my hidden ashtray dock idea, but it's an option. Basically it can charge your ipod and either connect to an aux-in or use an FM transmitter.

BTW, this website is totally legit and they take paypal if you're wary. But trust me, I've ordered from them before, they're awesome.

Enjoy!

It think people are missing the point. This doesn't have to be an FM transmitter...it's just there in case you don't have an aux in. The FM transmitter is a backup for older head units

Seeing as most people don't have an aux in already, yeah, FM transmission is what they'd be using.

TBH the best way to go is to tap into the CD changer as an aux in and play a blank cd (not blank blank, but blank as in an hour of nothing) on repeat. You need to play the cd because the aux in will play simultaneously with whatever the radio is set on.

My daughter has a 96 Maxima and has a cassette that has a wire on it that she plugs into her ipod. She doesn't use the cassette player for anything else. Is there a way to hardwire into the back of the unit?

Do you have Bose, aftermarket, non-Bose stock?

I have one installed in my '02 SE. The display is up on the dash to the right of the vents. The "brain" is mounted behind the radio, the ipod connector is to the right of the radio, and the control is mounted on the thick part of the base of the handbreak. All of the device leads are brought out from behind the radio with the trim holding them in place at their proper locations. I don't have an aux in on the bose, and it is an internal 6 disc changer so no cd input. What I did id put a casette adapter in the casette player, and routed the cord back behind the trim and around the back of the radio. It plubs right into the jack on the "brain". The sound quality is not perfect, but it blows away the fm transmitter. The installation is very slick and easy to do. all of the trim pieces pop out, and right back in again. If you can get your hands on one of these, and you have been struggling with your ipod, this is the best solution I have seen. You can control your ipod safely without having to look down at it. The display on the dash offers you the ability to keep your head pointed down the road while you change tracks.

Luckily, my car already had an aftermarket HU installed, so I went the aux-in route. The bad thing about this, I found out, is that you HAVE to use the screen, as that's where the logic is.

Here's what I ended up doing:
Controller: on Center console, right behind the shifter
Screen: Took off front of the ashtray and installed it there
Unit: taped behind dash, ontop of pocket (lol-tape-so ghetto)

Routed everything under the center console/radio and it works great. I originally had the screen just sitting inside the ashtray, but everytime I would take apart the dash, I'd take off the ashtray and the screen would just dangle there.

This proved bad because one of the wires ripped out and separated from the screen itself. I had to open it up, take apart the screen, solder the wire back together, tape it up, put some glue on the unit to hold the wires better. I put it all back together and hooked it up and worked fine after that. What is weird though is that inside the black cable of the screen are some wires that have protective coating just like any other wire you've ever seen. Then there is an unprotected wire running down twisted around the others...wtf? Why was this one unprotected?

Agreed with above. The FM transmitter is no good at all. AUX is the way to go.
