HELP!!! Head Unit quit working

I have an Eclipse 5342r in which I had installed in my 93Max (216k miles). I was experincing some erratic operation, including skipping. I decided that since it was already out of warranty, and since I already had it out of the car because I was doing some stereo wiring, I'll take it apart and clean it (occasionally got the dirty CD error message). I started by removing the clips that hold the face on. When I saw that it was only two electrical connectors and had nothing to do with the CD operation, I snapped it back in place. Then I began to take off the metal cover, removing the 'do not remove or you will void your warranty' sticker, and I saw what looked like black soot after I got it off (I bought the unit used from ebay, and it hasn't given me satisfactory performance since I've had it these past 2 months). At any rate, once I got the cover off, I saw that I left a disc in, and couldn't clean it with the disc in. So I went and plugged it into the harness still left in my car. I got nothing except an extending power antenna. I checked the lines with my multimeter, and it appears that the unit is recieving the proper voltage so, it isn't the harness. I'm stumped. Please help me. I hope I didn't pork the unit.
