Should I wall socket my old TC2K?

Since I have a new top assembly coming, I am thinking about putting the old one through the socket test. The only thing I am concerned about is messing up the motor, as I have to use it with my new top assembly. I can't really see the motor getting hurt from doing this, just the voice coil/cone/surround etc. that is all on te top assembly.

Also, does it matter if you wire the coils in series or parallel when doing this?

Any thoughts?

we do this with field destroyed woofers at work all the time. go ahead and wire it low as possible and watch it fry.

they seem to last longer the higher the impedance tho..

i doubt it, you might make it a little stinky is all. When we did it the motors were fine, the coils were fried to a crisp tho

I figured as much, as you'd have to get the motor pretty hot to warp it I would think. I also thought about goop from the melted voice coil getting in there though.

it wouldn't melt to the point of gooping unless you left it on there for a pretty extended period of time.

Well when I do it, I'm going to let it go until something makes it stop - I am betting that will either be a burned out voice coil, or a broken cone.

I saw a Sundown sub go for over 5 minutes on a wall socket, so I was going to see how long the TC would hold up...

Yeah we ran a Fosgate T2 iirc, ran for a good while wired series (prolly a few minutes no prob, woulda kept going but we just unplugged), and then we wired it parallel and it fried in about a minute.

I've got 2 DUB 12"s I could try too - I'm sure that wouldn't take too long

I did one of the DUB 12's today, and I must say it was less than remarkable(lasted a whole 4sec)...

Excuse my newb-ness, but whats the point of this? Sounds like tearing stuff up just for the fun of it.

At this point, all I can do is point you to a You Tube search for "wall socket subwoofer"

Enjoy!
