"Free Air" Sub

I'm looking to replace the Blose sub. This will be the second time I have replaced it, so I'm just going with something else (the first time was free actually, I got a refurb from the Nissan stealership and Bose reimbursed me, $150). I want to keep my trunk usable, so no boxes. Anyone have any experience with these types of subs (free air)? I just want an 8" sub, don't need anything too big. I just want it to sound good to me.

I know the Bose is a proprietary 7" sub so I will have to do some modifying to make an 8" fit to the rear deck. I've replaced the HU with a pioneer HU and the speakers are aftermarket as well. The only thing left in there is the bose sub (and the pillar tweeters). Thanks in advance for the info.

oh yeah, I plan on getting the Alpine MRP-F300 to power the sub.

That looks like exactly what I want to do. Did you use the original bracket to modify the new one or did you just have to free-hand draw a template and go from there? I'll just take all that stuff out and make it happen like you did.

Thanks for the info from everyone. Any more ideas are welcome.....

Yes, I copied the original sub mounting plate(size/mounting holes) and made it out of mdf.

Did you use a "free air" sub or not? I'm trying to figure out if I have to use a free air as opposed to a regular sub that isn't. I'm just wondering if since the sub wont be in a "box" per se, do I have to get a free air sub... Anyone?

I was looking into that also. I think there is juuuuusst enough room to put a 10". That's as big as I would go, if it fit. I'll have to do some measuring....

Its possible to go as big as a 15" back there but a 10 should be fairly easy just cut or bend the rear deck metal and make a baffle board atleast 3/4" thick and bolt it down and your good. The hard part is finding the right Free Air Sub that fits your needs

o.k soo seeing as though that question was answered, i have one of my own... Im also in the process of changing my blows sub and im trying to do a VERY cheap subwoofer i dont really care for the reviews on subs, im not an audio head, so with that said, how do i know if a sub can be used free space??? if a sub has the Fs (Free air response) of 60hz is that sub good enough for a free air application???

Look for a driver with LOW FS, around or below 30hz. A high QTS around .5 or higher and a VAS around 4cu ft.

Any sub can be used in a IB setup but the ones designed for Free Air/Ib use are designed to perform better in that enviorment

Good stuff, thanks for the info, now to look for a sub with high QTC, QTS values. Something tells me the higher the value, the higher the price...... We'll see...

^^^^^^^

Are you dropping that straight in or did you modify the space where the Bose sub was?

i thought the bose sub was a 7"??? anyways, yes im gettn wood and mount it where the bose would be, friend of mines just finished making a box for a 10" Rockford P1, so im using the leftover wood, probebly dynomat the area where the bose woofer support was and putting in longer screws on the board... who knows i might just carpet around the sub also... ill have pics

Yeah, it's 7" but I thought I saw some people being able to just drop it in, depending on the brand of sub. I'll have to check..

the bose only have 4 screws holding it in... the kicker has 8 so IDK if that really makes a difference
