To IB or not to IB...

I took the JL out since the surround is cracked.. i think im going to retire it..

I love the handling change without weight of the JL in the trunk!

I'm deciding between doing a single 8in where the stock bose sub is.. But I'm wondering it it will be the same output/close to my Sealed JL...

Either that or a Single fi.Q12 in a 1.5cuF Sealed box.. (I Don't think that would be that much weight..)

I really miss the bass. lol

It won't be anywhere near a sealed sub.

you can do subs IB and get amazing output. check out my photos fo Ideas.
a single
12" IDMax
incriminator audio flatlyne
Dynaudio 190 will work well if you mount a baffle underneath the rear deck and allow it to fire thru the 8" opening for the bose sub. The compression thru the smaller hole as well as the sound reflection off of the window will mimic a 5th order enclosure.

make sure you seal off the ski passthru behind the seat well (which is a great place to mount your amp BTW.

Another way to do it is to seal off the rear deck completely and add a larger sub firing thru the ski pass. My suggestion there woulr be a 15" IDmax, IDQ, FI IB15, or an acoustic elegance IB15 all can be had for pretty cheap. The lightest weight being the acoustic elegance IB15.

alot less power required for IB to get the same output as a sealed enclosure save on weight space and if done right can shake your trunk loose if thast what you like.

dont skimp on deadening your car. plenty of deadener and some expanding foam in large areas like around rear wheel well voids trunk lid etc.

GL

Except he just wanted to do an 8" IB in the oem location, not gonna give him the output he is used to for sure.

Otherwise I agree about IB, although it is likely IB subs will get louder in a sealed box, if applicable.

Just curious, but what do you mean by baffle? Do you basically mean some sort of a spacer so it can be used with the stock 8 inch hole without literally running into the speaker grill?

a baffle is the board the subs are mounted to. if you create a baffle below the rear deck there is no need to cut the deck.

the baffle board is what you mount your subs to. if you go from undreneath you can fire you subs thru the factory holes make sure your baffle leaves enough room for max throw of your subwoofer. like this

M3s are overrated.. i want one. jealous. lol Thanks for the replies guys! I think ima settle with a single 12in sealed

The JL will be repaired.. cheap and ghettoly with some epoxy as I'm not going to pay $400+ to have JL repair it.. then its going to be beat to death with a Behringer EP4000..

I'll take better pics soon. I just have 1 esotar 1200 12" sub powered by TRU s500. A lot of bass and still breaking in. 2 10's would be nice but 1 12" is definitely enough

I've been running a pair of 12" IBs for about 10 years now. They're not nearly as loud as my 3x JL 10" that I had before, but I'm running about 1/2 the power and it weighs 200lb less than the old setup! It also plays much deeper and attack & delay are cleaner than my old sealed setup. The IB setup will start rattling the sunroof at about 6hz.

wow, you have a sub in IB setup that actually hits as low as 6hz? I hear its ideal to run 20+ hz with IB setup, not to mention you can really ONLY feel (not hear) anything below that. What kind of sub are you running Matt? I also agree, a no box setup is super light compared to box and 3 10's not making a box setup any better.

IB setup will play much lower because the enclosure is much larger (trunk volume vs. box volume). The power handling is greatly decreased at those frequencies because of the large excursion, but it will still do it.
The point in going that low is that the intent is for feeling, not sound. Not that you want it to rattle your brain, but if you've ever been around a 60" orchestral bass drum, it's just as much a visceral experience as an aural.

The subs I'm running are some old school Focal 33VX. I have a pair in the back seat, and have considered mounting another pair I have (Still NIB) in the rear deck, but gave up on working on the car and bought a G35. it's been parked for almost a year waiting on me to find time to work on it and either sell it or do something fun with it.

Some crappy pics from 10 years ago:

Matt, thats a nice setup and I think I seen that before. For some reason I thought you had IB hanging from rear deck. Thanks for the explanation of IB. Feel is a huge advantage, though not the reason I jumped on it. I wanted something a little custom and a lighter setup.

Phxgld, thanks for the recommendation. Loving it!
