New HU questions

i have an 02 Max with the bose system, no navi, i'm going to put a new HU in it, but i had a couple of questions

1. Has anybody used either the Sony CDX-GT640UI or Kenwood KDC-MP342U? and if you have would you recommend them? i'm thinking the sony, but i'm not sure

2. I've found a part that would allow me to use the steering control, but it's not cheap and looking at the description it sounds like a lot of splicing and intricate work, although i'm getting this installed for me i just think it sounds like it could cause problems, so i'm just not sure whether it's actually worth the trouble.

Any suggestions or feedback would be appreciated!

Oh, and in case it makes any difference i have the computer controlled ac/heat rather than the manual

1 neither of those headunits would be good choices IMO. 2 v preouts are too weak to drive the bose amps.

The steering wheel adapter is commonly used, if you're not installing it and a reputable shop is, they (I'm sure) have installed many of them.

i'm probably going to have it done at best buy, but when it comes to the stereos i'm installing this to convert the new HU to run the stock amp

I like kenwood decks, I would look at a KDC-X993 if you can spend the extra it's well worth it for the added features.

Where are you located? A local member may be able to help install and save you some dough.

the install's not a problem, it'll be a Christmas present from my dad, when it comes to the stereo i really don't want to spend the extra cash... i'll be going to college next year and need to put as much money as i can back, the only reason i'm replacing at all is b/c of the CD problems and lack of ipod hookup. thanks for the advice though, i really appreciate it

Hey man,

I'm in the same boat as you. Looking to upgrade my crappy Blows system.

Thinking of getting this, as no one got it for Christmas for me
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...WX-GT77UI.html

It's within your price range and has direct ipod connection. It also ships with free accessories like wiring harness and dash components.

But I'm still a noob on car stereos and need to do more research on installing this on our Maxima's. Didn't even know I needed that extra wiring harness to run the stock amps...

thanks man, i'm looking for a single DIN though, i don't really want another big stereo lol, just personal preference. best advice i can give you for your upgrading needs is to go to crutchfield.com, they'll give you good instructions and other stuff specific to the car.

thanks for all of your help, i think i'm going to go with the sony that i originally posted b/c it's in my price range, i like the features and setup, and i've had good luck with sony products. i'm really looking for something simpler than the HUs you're posting just because i'm only going to be running the stock components. I really do appreciate all your help though, for someone that's learning i can use all the help i can get

If you wanna KEEP you stock deck, just get a US Spec ipod interface!

I had it in my 2k, got a new Kenwood HU, then installed it in my wifes 05!
