I am disappointed to see that no conclusion was ever really reached. I'm having this same issue myself (stock mirror vibrating and making noise) due to bass. This is with the factory Bose subwoofer and speakers no less I'm just curious if anyone could point me in the right direction as far as how to remove and/or open up the mirror to have a look inside without destroying the thing. If I can get a good look inside I'll bet I could figure out a way to stop the rattling.

Is the mirror in the FSM? I've never looked for it there.

Hell. Mine vibrates just due to low engine revs. Rather annoying.

 

There's this piece that goes between the windshield and rear view mirror. Its suppose to absorb vibrations. Probably it can help. I wonder if yours has it or not.

i gave up fixing mine...i even tightened every damn screw i can think of in the whole assembly.

 

Same here, now mine even drops without my subs on when it's hot.

 

I don't think you can do anything like that with a 5th gen. There's more to it than just a mirror stuck to the windshield, unfortunately.

My understanding from the other thread and my searching is that the vibration on my particular mirror is caused by the trim piece on the front rattling against the housing. Nobody ever seemed to have come up with a solution for that, though, and I don't really want to go ripping apart my complicated mirror.

 

I wonder if putting silicon around the seam would do anything to absorb the noise? I've noticed that it coming from there, as well. If i pinch it, while it's vibrating, it stops.

 

Hmm, possibly? I wonder how you would do it without it looking ghetto as hell, though.

 

Silicon is colorless and clear. Pretty sure it wouldn't be too noticeable, if applied in thin layers. Maybe 2? I only notice my rattle in the top right corner. I might try it, at a later date. It's been annoying me, to no end. Also now have a rattle somewhere in the dash above the glove box. This car is a rattle-trap after almost six years.

 

yep, hell my midbasses can cause it to rattle and move down.

 

On mine there are two black plastic pieces that cover the wire from the mirror to the roof lining. These pieces slide against each other and are pretty loose. I ended up pushing the top plastic cover up towads the ceiling of the car, and placing a small strip of black electrical tape between the two plastic covers to hold them in place. This alleviated the rattle quite a bit for me. I plan on putting something from behind as well. Maybe a small piece of rubber. It will fit between the windshield and the plastic pieces covering the wire. I tried this with a piece of folded paper just to see if it worked, & it did. These two things took most of the rattling away.
