Rear Speakers
Rear Speakers
I have a 92 Maxima GXE with the active speakers in the rear. I need to know what speakers size is in the back. and also how to get the grills off the factory speakers so i can get to the screws and see what size they are. I checked crutchfield and in some magazines it says 6x9 bottom mounts and other magazines say its 6"3/4". whats the real deal? and how do i get those grills off.

OK, Sparky, here's the deal…
The stock openings back there are for 6.5" ovals, I believe. I have a pair of Kenwood 6x9's mounted with adapters back there. In order to remove the Bose amp assemblies, you'll have to remove your back seat, then your rear deck in order to be able to remove the nuts that are holding it up back there (I think there were 4 bolts back there, but I'm not sure). It's a pain in the a$$ if you're doing this by yourself, but once it's done, you'll be able to do it anytime you want - but it'll STILL be a pain in the a$$!!! Once you do that, the assemblies should fall off the rear deck, and you'll be glad you did it, too. My 6x9s were attached to the bottom of the assemblies when I bought my car, and they sounded like **** (I thought the speaker was blown).
The grilles are attached to the rear deck, so anything you put back there will be covered up pretty well. I'm considering going with some bottom-mounted 6.75" speakers back there because I don't like the way the 6x9s are attached to the rear deck, plus I think that my adapters are damaged. Anyway, I hope that helps!

I have an 89 GXE, and when I put Pioneer TS-601 6x9"s in the back, the audio people where I had it done had to cut the back deck. Got to keep the original rear grilles though. The front speakers are 4x10" Pioneers.
BTW, anybody know how to eliminate rear deck rattle effectively?

If you haven't already purchased the 6x9's, and if you don't want to do any major mods to the rear deck or use adapters in order to install them, then I suggest going with the largest rounds that you can fit back there comfortably - you may be able to do better than 6.5", I'm just not all that sure. The only issue would be if you're concerned about how much the rear speakers can handle, because 6x9's generally are built to handle more wattage than their round coaxial brothers do.
You don't want to go breaking your bank account for rear speakers anyway. Most audio guys will tell you to concentrate your time, energy and cash allocations to your front soundstage - that's where you - the driver and owner - reside, and you should have "the best seat in the house" as far as your sounds go. The rear stage is just for filling the dead space in the back window area anyway. Your soundstage is supposed to resemble a seat at a concert, where all the action and the sound is coming from.
BTW - I have NO idea of what an 'Active Speaker' is. I know that's what the grille on a non-Bose stock system reads, but I don't know what's under there
Good luck with your install and your choices - sometimes I think there's too much to choose from!
