Kenwood head unit install issues

Now this has got me baffled, we were installing a single din Kenwood head unit in my friends 2000 Maxima.

Kenwood harness to OEM adapter wire harness, pretty simple (so says me) Red to red, yellow to yellow and ground to ground.

The unit's little red bulb glows red, and when the key is switched on the SD card's blue LED flashes along with that small red power indicator (I guess that's what that is). Nothing else happens.

Is there something obviously I missed here? I really can't believe anything was wired wrong, as it's basic simple 12V DC logic.

Had to put the stock radio back in for the mean time.

RTFM, yep, did that a few time. Gone over a few things, out of ideas.

As far as power connections goes there should be a ground, a constant 12V, and a switched 12V (acc). If you have it wired up properly then the HU is probably bad.

Which head unit is it? Are you 100% certain it is fully functional? Did you connect the antenna?

I don't recall the model number.

It's really basic, and thought there might have been something overlooked (ie; antenna)

The antenna is not hooked up, but in my thinking it should not matter. The unit should still power up.

I'm thinking the unit itself is bad.

Run your own ground, there is plenty of space for it. Most commonly in Nissans the ground in the harness is absent (other side of the harness) or useless. The OE unit grounds to the chassis via the metal brackets to frame.
