Whats wrong with building your own box?

C'mon guys have faith in yourselves! I heard most boxes you buy are made out of plywood and mdf is supposed to be better? I just recently built my box this winterbreak and it wasnt so hard, but more time consuming. I think anything other than a rectangle or cube should be alot harder.

Building your own box - novice

2kBlackMax,

Most serious boxes are anything other than cube
or rectangle, as one avoids parallel sides due to
issues with standing waves.

You're right it don't take a genius to slap 6 sides
together, but to tune and reinforce a box for the
energy created might take some fore thought, no
matter how simple the box's design.

If you remember your trig most of the angles are easy to calculate. And once you start glassing you can really take advantage of otherwise wasted space. And if you remember, subs are lowpassed, hopefully below 100Hz, so the wavelenths below crossover will all be 11.3 ft or longer. Now who has standing waves in a box in the car?

And lets not forget that most woofer makers include plans or dimensions they recommend for boxes to be built. Really takes alot of the trial and error out of it.
