fiberglass problem

I just started my fiberglass box yesterday and was able to get 2 layers done. However when I checked the box today i noticed there are many air pockets many of which are fairly large. Can someone tell me the best method of getting rid of the pockets?

UH,OHH,,,,

That's definitely something you don't want....air pockets, or bubbles... If the layers are dried already, you might be able to sand them out and cover those spots again with cloth and resin. OR, something maybe not as feasible (due to cost of fiberglass), is trash it and start over....but I would NOT suggest that unless there are a whole bunch of bubbles and really big ones.

One thing for sure is to make sure when you start up again, whatever you do,,,,be sure to use plenty of resin to soak the cloth thoroughly. Cut peices that are manageable, not just throw a huge chunk on and try to wet it. If any cloth at all is dry, it will make a bubble or pocket. Make sure each peice you put on is soaked through and through, and start from the middle of the peice and go outward to the edges of that peice. That way you soak it and work out air pockets all at the same time. Good Luck! Hope This Helps....DMAN

Take your time and do it right the first time, OR
Get in a hurry and keep tryin!!!

To make a mold I would use glass, resin, and foam. TO get rid of bubbles I would use a razor, cut them out or at least open. Then fill with resin and filler material. Or go to a pait store and get a large syringe. Inject the bubbles with resin. Problem with this secon option is that the resin will probably cure in the syringe before you finnish, making it useless for future bubbles. But if you plan all your injections carefully you can finnish in time to clean up the syringe with acetone or sterile alcohol.

I think I might start over. There are a lot of air bubbles and most of them are fairly large. What I did was take 2 big 8 sq. ft layers of cloth and laid them down and resined them. Maybe next time ill cut it into much smaller pieces.

OHHH MAN, I definitely think that was part of the problem. I think those peices were definitely too big. I did my first layer with peices of about 1ft squares(not a real big box). I don't know how big your box will be, so maybe you can do bigger peices than that, but make them manageable sizes. Measure out and cut a couple peices first, then paint some resin on the box for the cloth to stick to and so the under side will be wet, then place a peice on top, and finally paint resin on top. If you make sure to use a good coat of resin, you shouldn't have any problems. Good Luck!!!

Hope This Helps.....DMAN
