help with a !@#$# weird HU problem

i just tried installing a new cd player in my friend's ride. The head unit does in fact have power going to it because the lights around the display go on and the face flips over when i press the appropriate button...however..the display is completely BLANK!! and when i put in a cd nothing happens.

i checked to make sure i spliced the wire harness correctly (i.e. matching all the colors up right) by plugging it into my own car and it works 100% perfect. i checked all his fuses and they are fine...so my novice butt has run out of possible solutions. help anyone? thanks.

jjcmax,

What I'm going to say may sound redundant, but seeing how the unit works in your car and not your friends check, I assume yours is wired correctly

The biggest things I would check is verify;

a Good Ground (very important) Look for bracing or a good metal subframe.

If your vehicles aren't the same type I.E. GM , Ford, Nissan verify the the power leads by function rather than color as in the past I've had Metra connectors where the function color and car's harness color didn't match.

If you do these things you may find your problem

Illumination wire improperly hooked up? I personally wouldn't woth hooking up any of the orange wires (illumination wires). All they do is dim the radio when you turn the lights on.

If its not that, then its the radio. If the radio powers up and functions then its obviously not a ground or power problem, otherwise the radio wouldn't work at all.

i'll try not using the orange wires..but the head unit works PERFECT in my car. it plays cd's and everything lights up as it should. could there be something wrong specifically with just his car?

well.....the ground, although i discounted this idea before.....

if the ill...sugg. doesnt work look at the ground. On most nissans the ground isn't in the factory harness, the radio muct be grounded to metal in the car, connected ti chassis. Possibly you are starving the radio for ground, but I doubt it if the radio turns on and the face flips and all.

lemme know how you fare....if worst comes to worst you can call me or something, i install professionally.
