I found a place where kappas are ~$60 more than reference.

Which is a better buy, their specs are very similar.
IF you would chose reference over kappas why? and vice versa.

Are you talking about the subs or the speakers? Your poll suggests speakers. Which kappas are you looking at the new ones or last years "green" kappas? Give me more info and I'll tell you.

 

Basically they're the same but there are noticeable differences. The Kappa's can accomodate more power and the newere models should produce better midrange according to its specifications.

The References are, for the price, extremely good at producing natural sound. Midrange is somewhat lacking compared to the Kappa's but unless you're extremely good at noticing it you won't even know it's lacking a bit.

I got the References based on it's priceerformance ratio. 605cs up front and 652i's in the back. You'll definitely need an amp to get the most out of these babies.

but MY response was about subs. I didn't even think maybe he was talking about speakers when I looked them up. Look closely, lol, I'm not the one who started the thread

2) will they still sound decent powered by the head unit?

 

Any decent amp will do. I'm currently powering these with the stock headunit and now that they're broken in it does sound pretty good.
