Antenna Help

I need to replace my sisters antenna in her 96 maxima becuase she decided to take it through the carwash up (again....).

I've never really worked on a car before (aside from my firneds kitcar he's building - fierro ferarri), but I am getitng the Haynes manual for the car, so I figure that's a good palce to start.

I'm looking to put a permannantly upright antenna in. Is this possible? What can be done in order to stop the motor for the antenna from trying to put it up?

any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Does the '96 have the diversity antenna system also? (dual antenna system with one on the back window) Perhaps can just eliminate the stick antenna and see if you still get good enough reception. Anyway, it's the plastic line inside of the power antenna that lets the motor push it up and pull it down. Cut that off and it should be a manual antenna. If you just want to stop the motor, you can unplug the power to the antenna (that's what I've done at the moment with my broken antenna). Like most of the connectors on the car, you need to push in on one part in order to disengage the plug.

Basically what it has is the antenna beside the trunk on the passenger side. The antenna would retract into itself prettymuch, but since its busted all there is a cord. The reception is ok, but I'm not too intereted in getting water or snow in there because it's not sucha safe call. I was thinking of buying an antenna and just slamming it on there, and plugging it to where the antenna plugged in (as in the cable) Is there a fuse for the antenna which i can pull from the car?

I don't think the antenna has its own fuse. The antenna is already designed that rain can get into it and drain out from inside of it. It has a tube on the bottom of it that should drain out the bottom of the car.

So I can not fix it and will not have any problems?

I'm still interested in replacing it with a stationary antenna. Is that cool? (as in alright)

Should be okay. You should still unplug the antenna power if you can get to it easily enough. On my car (3rd gen) it was easily accessible from behind the jack access door.

It's a few inches forward and up from the scissor jack in the 4th gen, at least in my '99. Should be easy to locate and take care of it.
