second headunit

i have a 97 max se and i have a japanese version sony double din headunit installed. since japan has a different frequency settings i am not able to pick up any radio stations in the US. i was wondering is it possible to install another headunit just for the radio? if it is possible do i need anything else besides the headunit?

If you already have an aftermarket unit installed, you probably don't need much else. Just splice into the same wiring and such, and you should be set. Except for the antenna, I don't know how you would connect that to 2 Head units.

Why would you want 2 units instead of just replacing it?

Also, you might want to investigate a bit and see if the Sony is switchable for the frequency spacing. I've seen some radios that have an explicit switch for this, or even if there isn't a switch, there may be some way to change it by pressing appropriate buttons.

if you dont want to buy a new head unit, you may want to do a search for fm frequency shifters ( or something to that extent)

I know they are out there, I looked into these not too long ago. it will go b/w ur headunit and ur antenna wire (i think)

jap fm frequencies are like 78-90 or something along those lines. us and most rest of the world is like 80-106 or so. so all these freq shifters do is shift the frequency you want to here down so its picked up by the radio.

be warned tho, you will not be able to recieve the full fm frequency range with any of these freq shifters. simply due to the fact that jap fm frequency has a smaller range (12 if memory is corrected) than the rest of the world (us is like 16 or so)

also, you will have to relearn stations or keep a cheat sheet near the radio so you dont have to do math in your head whenever you wish to change stations.

also they sell freq shifters which shift different ranges, some only do 12 (ie 78+12 - 90+12) others do 16 and there may/may not be ones in between.

so if you want to listen to 97.1 with a 12 mhz freq shifter, you would need to tune in to 85.1 on your jap headunit

if this makes no sense at all, pm me and i will try to find you some links
