what makes a good head unit?

I have a kenwood cassette reciever. It was in the car when i bought it. I was thinking of just buying a disc changer instead of a new head unit. I think the kenwood is decent, but i want to know what makes a head unit actually a good peice. It has 4 outputs, 2 for front, 2 for back, the wiring harness input and the cd changer cable input. max output power 35x4, has bass and treble and other fades. Just like to get some suggestions, im a newbie and dont know quite what im doing. I would kinda like to just stick with what i have if its decent and purchase a disc changer.
thanks,
jon

Buying CD changer makes you connect it through the radio channel in your cassette player, which makes distortion and other NOTICEBLE sounds. I would NEVER choose CD changer instead of CD player.

CD player is a base (always get one at least with 2 pre amp outputs, in case you wanna connect an amp). Only then, ONLY if the CD player has CD changer control I suggest getting one.
Trust me I 've gone through this and CD changer needs to be connected to the unit which has CD changer inputs, other then that it'll play rather dirty!
Get Eclipse or Alpine. Very good products for 300-400 bucks.
