Using spare tire well as enclosure??

Any ideas on how to do this? Don't know if it's true, but I was told that there are do-it-yourself fiberglass kits. That is, a way to make a fiberglass mold to fit odd shaped spaces in your trunk. Anybody know if:
1. they exist
2. where to get one
3. reasonable alternatives

I want to make a reasonable custom enclosure...something low profile.
I would like to utilize the big area in the spare tire well since it is out of sight. Any suggestions or pics??
Thanks in advance...

I have not heard of "kits" for subs, but you can get fiberglass resin and glass cloth from Home Depot and Lowes and do it yourself. It really inst a hard job to build one, just make sure you have enough layers to make it thick, and use a piece of MDF to make the baffle. Overall, a fun weekend project. Do a search online, and I'm sure you'll find quite a few How-2's on the job.....

nvmymax2 did something like this to his 5th gen. He had like 3 subs in the spare tire well at Nopi last year.

let me get you some pics of my install. i was going to keep it a secret till i was done. but i want to help you out. i took my spare tire out and fiberglassed the well. the sub sounds awesome, the enclosure is very rigid.

it's an expensive way to make a box, but it was a lot of fun for me. and it's cool to learn new stuff.

if you need help let me know. i'll post the pics later tonight.

here are the pics, it's too dark for me to get some of the enclosure in the car right now. so all i have are some pics of it in the garage. i don't know if they will help you at all in building one though.

sounddomain.com sells a bunch of premade tire well enclosures. Dont know if they have ones for a Max though... probably not. check out carsound.com and their forum "fabrication". a lot of people have done it before and have set up some nice sites about how to do it.

15" , i'll hopefully get some pics of it in the car later. it's awesome cause you can't see anything but the top wood then it's in the car.

it's a total of 3.2ft^3 before displacement. i measured the volume with water. lol. took me a long time. i had a 3 liter bottle and i kept filling it up and pouring it out into the sub enclosure.

vic,

I was going to do the same thing. Just been putting it off cause i just did the $3000 mobile video install.

My question is, when you glassed the well, did you have the 2x4" sitting inside the well or did you put that on afterwards? And also, your top piece of MDF, that will sit above the trunk floor like an inch right? What are you going to put on top of it to keep the 15" sub safe? so nothing hits it.

Sorry for all the qustions, just very interested and want to do it and help others also.

i'm catching you on AIM, but for everyone else... i didn't use a 2 x 4 but i used some mdf and plywood. it's actually 4" x 3/4". i made this thing to spec. and i needed the 3ft^3.

first make the square frame out of wood, however big or small you need it to be. then just lay the glass over the wood and into the well. i'm still not sure how i'll finish it off though.

don't do it, if you catch a flat tire, it'll come out to you in a pretty penny...calling a tow truck etc. Better leave that spare tire alone.

Watch the "Virtual Pic of my Car" (in my sig) and at the end of the video you will see my sub enclosure. Three 10 in subs in a fiberglass enclosure that was built in the tire well. We actually made my tire well larger so I would have enough air space, we did this by cutting the bottom of the trunk out and rewelding it back the weay that we wanted it. But if you want to see a pic of my setup, check out the video!

you did a nice job. very nice. is the sr5 the drifter car or is the gt-s the drifter corolla? i am contemplating getting one just for the hell of having one to mess with.

oh and if anyone is wondering why my fiberglass is colored differently, it's because i'm too cheap, and i used grill cloth and fleece and very little mat and cloth.
