We recently discussed this here but yea, 6.5's will work just fine. I just installed them myself in my 90 Max two weekends ago. I took out the stock plastic baffles (which holds 4x6's) and made custom 6.5" wooden baffles out of MDF. Sounds much better. Here are some pics I took and some instructions on the process:

THX...

I was planning to do the same thing in my Max, but I've got 5.25" 3-Ways. I noticed that you didn't use any damping material in your install, but you say that your door speakers sound much better now. What exactly do you mean by 'sounds better'? Do your bass/mids/highs sound better, or does everything sound better?

Sorry for the q's - I just wanted to know from someone that's already done what I'm planning to do next.

hi pitbull,

the components just naturally sound better as the woofer is bigger than the 4x6's I was using. Dialouge (mids) is more clearer & realistic and I don't have to worry about distortion or HPF settings. It still doesn't sound as great as I'd hope; the tweeters are a little on the harsh side and I have to fool with the settings for each song sometimes. I'm thinking the speakers just need to break in.

Doesn't damping material just shield from outside road noise or is there some other sonic benefit? I always hear about people using dynamat, would it help the audio sound better? And where do I put it, inside the door or on the face of it?

Looks like I'm the one with the questions.
