Do I need to get a capacitor?

Hey guys,

I'm really close to getting my stereo installed. I'm just waiting for one more amplifier to get delivered.

I already have an Optima Yellow Top Battery on my car to help with the stereo, but do you think I need a capacitor too? Or would it be recommended?

If so, what is a good capacitor and where can I buy one?

Thanks,
-Nick

no you dont. if anything, i would reccomend an upgraded alt if you get any dimming with that setup. if not, then dont worry about it. just make sure that youve upgraded your battery negative to chassis, battery pos to alt and alt to chassis wires to at least the same as your amp power wire, if not bigger.

He better of get a capasitator for two reasons. One it cost a lot less then a new alternator and gives good results. Two if he ever desids to get a new car he can just move the cap from one car to another. What ever you do, do not connect two caps to power your system or you going to over power the system and kill it.

Personaly when I get my car and a system i am going to install one cap to power my stereo and a second one to power my neons and all the other aftermarket electric things with in my car.

Yeah I agree. If you're running any kind of high wattage, like what you've got listed, definitely go with a capacitory. It's a cheap peace of mind, new alt would be the second step if neccessary. Get a digital cap with the LED readout...RF, Stinger, Lightning Audio all make good ones.

I found this web site. I think the prices are good. http://www.uscaraudio.com/
One more thing, make sure you get a 1000watt cap and not a 500watt.

umm, its just a bandaid and nothing more. if you dont have the power to start with, you wont have it to feed the amp.

i see nothing wrong with wiring two to your system (if you absolutely MUST have them). companies make buss bars for a reason. its so that you can run 2 caps in parallel if you need to. second of all, you cant force power thru things. it can only go thru if it is drawn thru. thats why fuses blow when youre running too much power thru them (from running too small of fuse, or by shorting something).

there is no reason to put a cap on all your other stuff, because it doesnt need instantaneous current. all that is doing is wasting your money (by having one, and secondly, by using one where it doesnt help).

btw, just in case youre wondering, i DO have a cap, and it doesnt help any. i bought it thinking it would, but now i dont even have it installed.

im sorry, but i must disagree. one of the things to look for in a cap is a low esr rating. getting an LED display just increases esr and makes it even less worthwhile. also, contrary to popluar belief, the alumapros are not very good caps, cuz they have a very high esr.
