Replace Bose HU and not speakers without adapter?

I always thought if you replaced the Bose head unit with an aftermarket one, you had to buy an adapter to make it work with the Bose speaker setup. But a post I saw in a thread last night made it sound like if you bypass the Bose Amps and go right to the speakers, it would work. Is that true? I was under the impression they were a weird ohmage speaker, like 1 or something.

I'm thinking about upgrading my system, and I don't want to buy that adapter just to stop using it after a few weeks/months.

I know the impedance mismatch causes some trouble, but I'm not sure exactly what the trouble that results is, ie if it's just horrible sound, or doesn't work at all, etc.

I'd say just save up until you can buy a set of speakers to put up front, and an amp if you wish. Then do the rest sometime after that if you're low on cash.

Sounds like that's gonna be the way to go. I did some web searching and found a site with a good amount of detail about the Bose system:

http://canuck.audioguy.net/bose.html

that would probably be a good link for the stickies.
