Several ways to do this. If you have an aftermarket head unit and an Amp, you can go to Radio Shack and buy a phono to Male RCA stereo adapter that will plug into the headphone jack of your laptop. You would also need Two dual female RCA to single RCA male splitter, also available at the Shack, which would plug in-line with your Stereo out of your Head Unit to your amplifier. The cable from the laptop would plug into the empty female RCA's that are left open from the previous step.

If you have a Stock Head Unit, you can get an RF adapter that will plug into the headphone jack of your laptop and broadcast a tiny FM signal directly to your stereo via an unused frequecy. There are proabably decent ones out there, but the cheap ones are exactly that...cheap.

If you need more detailed help, just let me know...

This is really good news for me... Search works wonders.

I think I want to do this mod now....so how about playing DVD? If i have that setup you mentioned for sound, then i can use a video out to a small monitor in the dash and it should work fine right? (I would use the laptop screen for the back passengers and the in-dash for myself and the front passenger)

Any known conflicts?

This should be a very easy mod for you to install. Most of the smaller monitors accept a standard RCA or S-Video input. Your laptop should at the very least have the RCA video out option, which is the yellow RCA jack on the back or side of your laptop.

You may have to enable the output for that video jack, but it should work.

Good Luck, let me know how it goes!

I'm low on cash and the next year in college is just around the corner so who knows what'll happen.

Here's a good resource: http://store.autotoys.com/cgi-bin/wfp53024.storefront You'll find a monitor (with RCA input) that fits perfectly into the dash after you make an opening. It's 224.95 and i think shipping is free if you use Paypal for something over $75.

For fellow Maximites: I'm planning on purchasing plexiglass and metal rods and brackets to make a cool looking car desk for laptops. This is a project I might begin in late AUGUST or SEPTEMBER. I'm thinking about wiring neon lights to the plexiglass to increase show quality. Expected selling price is real cheap...way way way less than the $150 for conventional ugly looking car desks. I'm thinking somewhere around $50 for a device that is more complicated than some shift ***** that sell for more than that. I'd appreciate some feedback on this idea. I'll begin a prototype sometime soon so expect a new thread with pictures and details.

Just wondering...could you draw a diagram of this and post it...please

Does the headphone jack split into a R and L Male RCAs? As far as the dual 2F to 1M RCA, one would be for R and the other for L correct? I dunno, i'm confused...

I'm not sure I completely understand this. The adapter plugs into the back of the laptop. That part I understand. But then where does the other end of the adapter plug into, or how does it transmit the signal? You said it uses an unused radio frequency, so is the adapter with one end going to the computer and then some sort of small transmitter that sends the signal to the radio? Thanks for the help.

Exactly, the device that plugs into the headset jack is actually a Mini FM radio broadcaster that will send a signal, say 88.6 FM.

This is a VERY easy setup, but I would recommend that you look around for a solid transmitter. I tried a cheap one once. It worked, but it was somewhat faint. If you search the web, you will find more options.
