Audio: damping doors
#2
I would recommend doing both the inside door frame and the door skin. I did both of mine and noticed a big difference.
If you're looking to get rid of road noise, damp the door skin. if you're looking for audio noise, do either/both.
the black goo I just left on mine and live with the mess, but yiou can probably get it off with some tar or adhesive remover.
it's also not water soluble, so you may be able to spray the door frame with a light mist of water and "roll" it off. once it breaks lose from it's bond with the door, the wet metal will cause it to slide right off and it won't stick again.
(I've used the stuff before to seal speaker enclosures, and when I apply it, I just wet my fingers and it doesn't stick to my hands, jsut the wood/metal I'm applying it to.).
hope that helps.

I would go w/...
between the trim and door. There's an imitation dynamat that you can purchase at: http://www.mcmaster.com/
It does the same thing as dynamat, but is cheaper. Just search for page 3040 on the right and click on index. Down at the bottom, you want the High Temp Mastic. That is the same thing as dynamat. If you want the same stuff as Cascade V-Blok, get the Viscoelastic.

I agree with matt on that one. One idea is this
When I worked as an installer, we had a guy use the Dynamat that is used under the hood on the inside of the door, as he didn't want the hassle of masking everything and spraying the Cascade, and then TWO layers of Dynamat. I always recommend 2 layers if you don't mind the weight and added cost.
Hood liner worked pretty well. I was impressed.
just my $0.02.( and don't ask for change or a refund)

Another VERY effective option..
after applying a layer (or three) of dynamat, glue on a layer of 3/4" open cell foam. I did that on my doors and it made more difference than adding a second layer of dynamat.
You can get it for about $6/yard at most any hobby/fabric/upholstery store.
if you wanna go all-out, you can put another layer of dynamat or vinyl on top of that. this whole thing together is essentially the same as the $$$$$ Black Hole 5 pad that is sold at high-end home audio shops. works VERY well.
