My battery has been dying for a while but I procrastinated and now it is dead. I am leaving on a trip tommorow and I need a good battery. I wanted a yellow top but no one in town has them stocked. Anyone have a good alternative battery?

I'd go for a Gold sears battery, comes with 3yr warranty, can't go wrong and its a good lasting battery.

 

A good sealed Westco battery. Or the identical Stinger / Streetwires batteries. Great surge power, reserve capacity, numerous recharges possible. Also can be mounted horizontal, vertical, whatever. Numerous sizes and shapes available.

Is the gold as good as a Yellow top, because as my battery died I noticed a lot of alternator wine and I don't want that any more as I am pretty sure that it was battery related.

 

Well I have never experienced yellow top. But I do not that Sears of a nice service Package on their Gold Installs and It is top of the line Die HArd

 

If this is due to stereo issues, I would go with a yellow top definately..charging cycle is quicker draw is better than a conventional battery, and some people say it's not possible, but sound quality is better too...
there are other solutions to a yellow top though, see if there is someone in town with a "red" top as it will pretty much do the same and it's better for your car's electrical system.several companies like champion, interstate and others have merged with exide for the red top battery. the older 1's that look identical to the yellow's are better, but the others are o.k. (bigger on top than the actual cells)
but a plain jane or die hard will basically provide the same thing in even a small car audio system..something 1k watts total power and less

 

I have about a 1k watt system, so a red top is good too? If I cannot get a yellow top which is the next best? Brand is not a concern.

the above mentioned will fit the bill fine.Interstate makes good batteries as well.For normal everyday use that system will only pull on average of 40 amps.That is not a big challenge for car batteries.
the only advantage to a yellow top really is that it discharges slow and recharges quick.People say in an a/b comparison, that a battery won't make a difference in sound quality but I really don't feel that way.I could tell a big difference in sound just from switching from an AC delco to an optima.
I'm not trying to sell you a battery by any means, The megatron will work fine.Interstate owns optima by the way, they may be able to do somthing for you on an optima if that is what you really want, but i would go with the die hard or the interstate if you can't get an optima.
