Dumb question- I assume that this needs to be at the source end of the signal cable to do its job, right?

Not really. You could use your speaker outs and turn them into RCA outs. Then you can adjust it, it would be like a really good line converter.

Sorry misundertood your question. Yes close to the head unit would be optimal but I've seen them mounted far form the HU.
