Autocrossing an Automatic

Anyone autocross an automatic? I've been to a few autocross events, but this weekend is going to be the first time I drive. I have a 97 auto, should I put it in "2" instead of drive, so that it locks out 3rd? The course I'm going to, I won't need anything more than 2nd gear.

I figure for my first time, I'll take it a little slower. And make sure that I look ahead.

Re: Autocrossing an Automatic

Sounds like a plan to me.

Good idea to make your 1st run at a slightly slower pace. I think it's easier to realize where you could have gone faster than it is to figure out how much slower you should have gone in other places.

Are you going to be switching to 16's? Actually, what wheels/tires do you have now?

Stock 16" SE wheels with Kumho 712's

Thinking if I like this and continue next year, I'll get some lightweight 16" wheels and Faulkens.

I ran the stock 16" 5-star's last year. They're actually not that bad as far as weight. 6.5" is a bit narrow for 225 rubber but they did well for a stock rim.

keep that car in D. its fine.

i've driven auto in auto-x before and my instructor always says just keep it in D rather than shifting out.. if you're on the throttle and carving, the car will automagically be in 2 most of the time anyway, but will also help you shift it to a lower gear on those slightly longer straights.

anyhoo. when i autox in my max i always kept bouncin it off rev in 2nd anyway.

i got faster times when i did that than shift to 3rd.
