Track setup/ Handling Q....

Last weekend, I did an open track event at Hallett Raceway near Tulsa, OK. it's a 1.8 mile road course. VERY challenging. one of the hardest tracks in the country to run fast.. http://www.hallettracing.com/hotlapcc.html

Anyway, I'm running 235-45-17 Sumitomo HTRz-II with 40psi up front, Kumho 712 with 40psi in the rear..

450lb springs up front, 350 in the back.

ST sway bar in the rear, stock in the front.

camber set at about -2 up front, toe at 1/8" out.

As I was playing around trying to get a feel for the braking zones at the track, the back end had a horrible tendency to come loose on me but ONLY when I was entering a left turn. Right turns, the car would push a little but was pretty neutral otherwise.

I haven't properly corner-weighted the car yet, but what else would you guys recommend to try to fix the problem?

Considering the air pressure is the same in all the tires and it's handling differently when turning left and right, that would tend to tell me I've got a corner weight problem, correct? Any other ideas though?

By the end of the day, the problem seemed to have corrected itself, but I think it was just the fact that I unconsciously stopped trail braking altogether and just let the a$$ end settle down before entering the corners. If I could have fixed that, I could have easily wiped those pesky Miatas off my a$$ and stopped pulling over to let them pass me!

Curious - why the different tires front/back? Have you tried running them reversed? What happens?

because I wore out the front pair not too long ago and only had enough $ at the time to buy a pair of Sumis.

Haven't tried them reversed yet.. might do that after I get settled in Houston.

Are your fronts and rear tires different size? With proper tire rotation, I don't see how 1 set could wear faster than the others.

Anyways, about the braking. I know on my 97 Max, The right rear locks up 1st. I have yet to figure out why. But this proves to be scary in sharp right handers. But like you said, I now complete most of my braking (save for slight turn-in) before I enter the turn.

In the 93, I haven't taken it to the track yet. BTW, what springs/struts are you using? This weekend I should have eibachs/koni in, with stillen rsb, courtesty fstb. fsb will go in later.

tires are the same size. reason I wear through them so fast are because the fronts don't last long. too much torque and some BIG a$$ brakes. the front wheels are hardly ever spinning at the same speed the rears are!

set up.. (you didn't read this. I hope the rest of the 3rd geners don't either)..
cheapie coilover kit. made it myself. 450lb x 7" Eibach springs up front. 350 x 8" Eibach springs in back. Koni struts in modified front housings (for lower ride height and more spring travel).

Need to borrow some 4th gen camber plates so I can figure out how to drop the front end another inch and gain some spring travel. right now, there's not enough spring travel once I get the car low enough that it looks decent.
