general question about stock and street touring class
general question about stock and street touring class
anyway...I'm reading that cosmetic mods get you out of stock and into street touring. Does this put you in a higher, more competetive category?
I shaved a few emblems and plan to get an aftermarket spoiler soon. Will this get me into street touring? I'm going to auto-x for the first time this saturday.
thanks

It's the spoiler that's going to put you into STS.
As long as the weight you eliminated by "shaving a few emblems" is small, you're still stock class legal. From http://moutons.org/sccasolo/Rules/stock.html is the following:
I realize that "do not materially reduce the weight" is a phrase that's open to variable amounts of interpretation, but my take is that if it's only a matter of a few ounces you're OK. Make that several pounds and I think you just became protest bait at anything above a regional event.

13.2 Bodywork
Accessories, gauges, indicators, lights and other appearance, comfort and convenience modifications which have no effect on performance and/or handling and do not materially reduce the weight of the car are permitted.

yes, but on the rules of Street Touring,
7.2. BODY WORK
1. Pedal kits and other interior cosmetic accessories may be added.
2. Any fully padded and upholstered front seats with reclining seat backs, rear seats may not be removed.
3. Removal of factory trim (rub strips, emblems)
4. Alternate steering wheels are allowed except that steering wheels with an integral airbag may not be changed.
5. Fenders may not be cut or flared but the inside lip may be rolled in order to gain tire clearance. Flares that are part (left out of rulebook for 2003, but I predict it will return...Ed.) of body kits may be attached to the stock fenders. The intention is to allow cars to maximize tire width up to the maximum allowable size. No other changes to the stock fenders or wheel wells are permitted.
6. Spoilers, body kits, rear wings, etc.

Those are mods that are ALLOWED in ST. those aren't necessarily what throw you into ST... i.e. They de-badging may be allowed in stock class as well based on the rule that Norm presented.
de-badging doesn't change the performance or handling of the car one iota, and the weight loss is minimal- so they shouldn't complain about it.

Since this is new for you ask if SanFran'll let you run with Street Tire stock classes. Street tire usually isn't as strict as formal national classes.
Even if they throw you into STS just get a feel for the sport and learn as much as you can. And have fun.
