Hankook Ventus Rs2 Z212

Hey, anyone got info on these tires? The sound like they might be the shiznit for the price- 200 treadwear makes them stickier (on paper) than almost any other street tire- (save azenis) and only $78 per!

What I want to know is if they get greasy when hot like the azenis that they are clearly competing with...

I've got good info on these. Good reviews during the past ~30 days since release (incl dual class wins at Atlanta Tour). On par with the MX and just slightly inferior to the 215 & 615. Soft sidewall, not too bad in cold. No solid data on best heat range yet cept it better warm. Shaving required for ultimate perf. Shortages of product in USA already particularly in 15" - SE region customs. Contingency $$ announced this week. I'll be on the phone with them tomorrow regarding that in fact...

Wow, cool- So you would expect these to be good track (not a/x) tires then, eh? If they dont grease up like azenis when hot then this might have some application on the track.

though I use them for a/x, not road course, so can't speak to the high-heat capabilites. Very pleased with them overall, and can't beat the price....

and yeah, they are real sticky...

Pressure update

I'd suggest Hankook rears need to be much lower than the fronts.

After 18 runs on em I'm now running 41f/32r lbs with decent rotation. The fronts roll very little more at 40lbs vs high 40's. The rears stick too much over 35lbs and you get understeer. Your setup may differ due to springs/_SB's etc. but it's a good starting point.

Brian,
that's close to what I've been running in recent events...40-42f and 34r. Over 42lbs in the front I have problems with traction on accelleration.

That's good to know we match and can compare. I've been doing 1st runs at like 35r otherwise there's too much spin. 28lbs was fun and the only scary rotation I've seen all season. I had given up on the Kooks thinking they were too small and screwing up my geometry. I was just running rears too high (oh and geometry is still fdup but they do grip)

I'm wavering again....the price of the 'kooks is just so alluring, considering all I'm gonna do is thrash them....$106 per tire in 245/45/17.....vs $139 for the MX's....which seem to compare similarly. I'm moving up from 225/45/17 last season since I can....

only problem is that edgeracing won't shave, and I have yet to find anyplace local that can to it...whereas I can have teh MX's shaved at Tirerack.

brian, are you planning on using yours again this season (happy with them?)

Yes I'll be using them for street tires when it's not too hot out. I only got to try them twice last year before giving up because of too low of ride height. Shaved they lowered me another .8" beyond my already low ride height. I'm guessing my roll center was somewhere around the local water table.

Both they and the MX are right at the tops of the choices. The MX handles heat a little better but the Sentra in GRM was .2 faster on the Kooks - it's valid data and the best I've seen for us. This year lots of new models are coming too incl Federal, BFG, Bridgestone, Nitto, and maybe even another Falken. In a few months something may change again.

found a place that I can get the kooks cheap (and shaved) FYI:

www.frisbyracetire.com

seems like these guys know their stuff, even though their website is ghetto. I've heard them talked about on the miata and s2000 forums before.

Frisby's excellent and has a good rap in the racing community. That's who I used here. They're hardcore with club racers and do a ton of volume with the real R rubber. I found shaving mine to 4/32" still left alot of void on mine. You might consider going down to 3/32" or even 2/32".

GRM had a big STS tire comparo with New Azenis, Old azenis, Advan NEovas, MXs, RS-2s and KDs i believe. The test was on a 2002 se-r i believe, and the results were something along the lines of:
New Azenis
Old Azenis
Neovas
RS-2s
MX
KDs
Basically tenths separated the new azenis and rs-2s, so if tenths are that important to you spend the bucks, if not the rs-2 is a great tire for the price (better than any other street tire). GRM said they loved it they just wish there was less "void Area" and they look foreward to an updated version.
