Racing Seats

Anyone here have any racing seats installed on their car? Plan on buying one sometime soon and was wondering if i could get some opinions about any seats, such as quality, seat rail fitment issues....etc. Also what harnesses are you using and where you bolt them up? any help is appreciated, thanks.

The Corbeau CR1 (Carerra) are what I'm using as well.

They were great at first, but now that they're ~3 years old, they are definitely showing their wear. Next time I buy, I'm going to buy some sparco, Recaro, or Cobra- even if it's for the driver seat only. they tend to hold up much better to daily wear & tear than the Corbeau.

I am affraid that the seat will be way too low for my taste, so I haven't gotten them yet. I got a big track day coming up on the 20th of next month from work, I'ma be against alot of guys from work and their machinery.
Seats I'm considering are Corbeau TRS, I wanna be able to use them on the street also.

I got a Sparco Clubman 4 point harness that I use when I go AUTOXing. It helps me QUITE alot, as I am not sliding around the seats as much. I bolt it down to the rear seat belt buckles and the driver side rear seat belt via the OEM 14mm bolts, as far as the sides I bolt the harness to the stock mounting point by the B-pillar and the seat track- to floor bolt- it works pretty good. I still wish I had a racing seat as the stock seat wasn't ever designed with harness usage in mind. I unbolt the harness after each event and use my OEM belt on the street.

Corbeau Forza seat with a Schroth Rallye3 harness here. You'll probably need a Corbea extender with the rails otherwise you're positioned way to far back. Forza's not bad but the 72deg angle wasn't upright enough for my taste and I washer'd it closer to 74deg. If it wasn't for the weight I'd go reclinable next time. The Schroth is excellent and still allows use of the back seat. When I had the Schroth with my OEM seat you could tuck the harness under the seat and rear cushions so nobody could tell you even had a harness installed. Brackets were a tight squeeze and just a minor mfg error can cause em not to fit the bolts perfectly.

somewhere on my website, yes.

You can see that after 1.5-2 years, they are faded quite a bit:

Matt, do you have any close-ups of the seats that are faded? Also, did you get lumbar?

I'm using the rear lap belt mounting bolts.. I'm the only one in the car 99% of the time, so it's not an issue. if I have to haul someone in the back for more than a few miles, I just grab a 14mm socket and pull the shoulder straps off.

for the lap belt, I drilled some holes in the steel bracket under the seats.

Matt:
Nice to see you have 4-points for both you AND the passenger. That's a good sign for a track instructor as opposed to the driver being secure and the instructor flopping around with the standard 3-point..

yeah.. it looks ghetto otherwise anyway.

the 2" straps are also too narrow for my tastes. the 240 will be getting 3" 5 or 6 point harnesses and some real shell/bucket seats. (mainly because it's required for NASA competition.. no tube & cloth seats allowed for SE-R cup classes)...

would it be possible to mount in 350Z seats that are heated and powered and have them use my heating and power function on my 2000 maxima?

I'ts very possible, but the fun part would be dealing with all of the airbags and other misc crap in the Z seats.

I have a sparco Evo in my Camaro, I would not recommend it for street use. It's really comfortable, but the fabric has not been very durable. The alcantra part is super sensitive to UV and fades quickly. It eventually split open and I wrapped it in hockey tape. The high wear areas have also begun to split. Good thing I'm not too concerned with looks on that car. Seems like the Corbeau and Cobra seats I've seen have held up better, and they are cheaper.

I wouldn't use a 4 pt on the street or track. I use it for autocrossing just to hold me in and because the chances of a collision are much less than on a street. If you are running harnesses on the street you should invest in the anti-submarine belt(s), and be damn sure that they way you mounted all the points are strong and the angles/forces aren't going to do strange things to your body (like compress your spine, break your neck, etc). Other issue is the fuzz. I've heard that they will ticket you for not wearing your seatbelt if you are only wearing harnesses. Apparently since it isn't "factory", it isn't considered a seat belt. Why give them a reason to pull you over?

If you just want to be held in a little better, try using just a lap belt along with your factory belt. Or, get a CG lock.

I leave my harness bolted in all the time, but I use my stock belts for street driving. I'm sure the 4 pt would be fine for street use, as it's DOT legal as well as SFI rated for the track, BUT it's a pain to mess with getting in and out of all the time. the factory belts are much easier to use for daily stuff.

Also when wearing a harness it's impossible to reach in the back seat or the glovebox for anything. Also, in many cars the belt tensioner & lock is the trigger for the airbag.

anyone ever think of fabing up a harness bar for our cars so we can properly mount harness and the the right angles so they wont compress our spine in an accident.....hint Matt....hint....so i could actuall use a harness at the track

I spoke recently with a local shop that is well-known for making roll cages/roll bars for the hardcore race community, and they told me that they would rather not make a "harness bar" for me, as they considered them to be unsafe in a rollover. They opinied that with a harness bar, if a rollover occurs, it would be nearly impossible to "duck" the roof caving in with a harness over a harness bar. That, and most harness bars will count as "transverse frame stiffening" for SCCA purposes, unless they are somehow setup with a heim joint.

They suggested either getting a full roll bar, or using harnesses attached to the rear seat belt bolts with a quick-release tension strap in case of rollover. (I will be doing the second option myself)

I believe the guy's comment went something like "harness bars are for Civics with body kits and big tails that hang out in parking lots trying to LOOK fast.....not for actual track cars."

I'm not really (at all) worried about rollovers in the maxima, but these guys are highly-regarded and I'll take their word for it. Their shop is full of VERY expensive cars getting full cages installed for some of the pro-am racing leagues.

yeah, pretty much what Irish said there, but I wouldn't necessarily be worried about the thing killing you in a rollover. just bolt the harness into your rear seat belt fasteners and you'll be fine.

if the car is ever in a rollover, while you're bouncin around inside the car, you're not going to have time to think "oh, the celing's caving in.. I'd better lean over this way to save my head" no.. you're going to either be screaming like a little baby, or you're going to be holding onto the wheel for dear life and if the roof caves in, your head is going to be in the same place either way. so the point about a harness bar preventing you from moving out of the way is moot.

I was at OG Racing today (they have a big online warehouse of racing stuff) and most of those guys were actually using the CG-lock, even with 1,000 harnesses back in their warehouse

As for me, I got an outstanding deal on this...since the latch&link setups are basically on clearance now that everyone is using camlock.

3" 5-point harness for under $100 (including clip-in mounts and eye bolts)....I will not be using the submarine strap though, since I am in stock seats.

That's funny about everyone using camlock. I *hate* camlock belts. I hope they keep making latch/link style.

the only thing i worry about in mounting the harness to the seats bolts is the angle of the straps....because that are actually supposed to be angled up form the drivers shoulders so they dont compress the spine in a lock up....i know for aut0-x is no big deal but full roadcoarse days u want the proper mounting angle

Matt and kelseymax knows I was going to post eventaully.

I have sparco torino seats in my 94se. The brackets are made by wedge engineering. They make every kind of bracket you can imagine.

yeah, I agree...but for the time being I will just be doing autocross, soi'm not too worried about it. If I start to road course race, I'll set up some brackets at the top of the rear firewall with a reinforcing bar for the right angle, or just use the 3pt stock belt....
