vlsd or quaife
vlsd or quaife
I couldn't figure out if I should post this here or in the chassis section. But I decided on this.
I'm nearly finished with my max at least builing wise the next thing on the list is a new clutch and a diff. The clutch I figure out but the diff is another story.
Seems I really only have two choices which isn't a bad thing. Either the vlsd out of an ae 01 or i3o/35 or the quaife unit. Obviously the vlsd is a lot cheaper but am I limiting myself in the handling department? I know the quaife is supposed to be a he11 of a diff but would a vlsd even come close. I can get one of those for far cheaper.
I'm sure it makes a difference so the complimentaly mads are jic coilovers with higher rate rear springs rsb sfc f/rstb and every es bushing. The car handles decent but it really needs a diff to be able to put the power down.
Thanks all

The biggest difference is going to be longevity. The VLSD works by heating up a silicone liquid whenever the wheels spin. This fluid has a limited life, and the effectiveness decreases both as the heat goes up, and over time. By 100,000 miles, many VLSD units might as well be open diffs.
No one has broken a Quaife in a Maxima, and the units are warrantied for life. They are mechanical, so there is nothing to overheat. They also react much faster that a VLSD, which has to have a bit of wheelspin before the silicone activates.
Another bonus, you get to use your stock axles with the Quaife.

Alright that's what I thought. Was pretty much set on the quaife but there's a vlsd forsale in the 5th gen classified section so it got my brain working. I figured with the lifetime warranty itd prob be an awesome unit.
Is there anywhere else to get one besides cattman. I plan on getting a few parts thru them for my wifes max so maybe I can get a lil deal but its still quite a pretty penny.
And would those of u who auto x they're maxs would the quaife be a more drastic "character" change then the vlsd? My brothers got a spec v with the lsd trans so that should be similiar to the max unit. I liked that a lot and in a way my max handles a lot like a bigger longer spec v. If the quaife unit is just a tad more aggressive at transfering that power to my outside wheel then I think I've made up my mind.
I know for a fact I'm getting one for my sho. Omg does that inside tire lite up during fast corners. But that's gonna be my track car. The max is just my weekend car and automotive testbed
Thanks for all ur help everyone. All the comments u can give me are worth a lot to me.

Cattman does not carry them any longer, and you cannot buy them from anywhere else. Brian Catts had them made, he shipped an open diff to Quaife in Britain and they made them for him. I bought the second to last one he had over a year ago, and I'm pretty sure he sold the last one. The only option now is to get one used, or from someone selling one they never installed. I know there were 2-3 of them listed in the For Sale section for quite a while. There are only around 30-40 of them in existence.

There was someone selling one in the forced induction/4th gen classifieds forum about a month ago. I believe he was asking around $1250 for it...search the past few months in those subforums and you'll find it.
Oh yeah I never even put that in the options pile.
Altho I've heard that on a budget they're not too shabby for like straight line racing. But I have no intrest in just going in a straight line.
The quaife is still on cattmans site. I emailed them to see if they're still avaible.
I tried searching in the classified and couldn't come up with much but then again I am using a blackberry with crappy signal. So its a little harder. A real computer would make this much easier. But I currently live in a tent in bfe. Last week of pre-doployment training woot woot.

paemt6220 and VQPower702 both have Quaifes for sale right now according to what I've seen in the classifieds. They're not cheap, but they significantly alter the character of the car when they're used on a road course or in autoX. I have one, and I've run my car on the road course with it and I assure you it's a helluvalot different than it was when I had my open diff maxima on the road course.
As has already been stated, there is no comparison that can be made between VLSD and Quaife. None. VLSD is nicer than open diff, but Quaife is in an entirely different league. And no, they're not available anymore as mtrai said.
Like kzoosho said, the spec V is a helical LSD and is more similar in operation to the quaife than to the VLSD, far superior to VLSD.
One thing you need to be aware of is whether or not your desired class for autoX allows for an aftermarket limited slip diff, some do not allow for it I believe.

I tried pming both of them but it said they're names weren't right so nada.
Ill just post a wtb and see what I can find.
I'm sure real auto x events would bump me up a class or two. I'm mainly worried about larger road cources and I just fun run and practice with the max. Since my sho is gonna be my main track car I'm just gonna have fun with the max.

Off topic, but good luck with your deployment.

I have one for sale for $1,000,000,000.29+shipping. We had Cattman do a group deal for us about a year ago. That put about another 25 in existence. I had a VLSD that did work at one time but it has since worn out and does the one wheel peel. If you can make it happen, get a quafe if at all possible.
Mine is now in my trans. Long story.
anyhow, Talked to cattman last week, after hearing what he has been offered for one, I was nucking futs to have listed a NEW IN BOX Quaife for $1320 anyway. I still can't believe I was offered the amounts I was offered. If I every sell mine, it will be at a min of $2000, probably more.
About 50 made per cattman
Thanks
Chad
PS: it is awesome!!!

im kinda new here but from what i have been reading the vq35 and vg30 have the same trans bolt pattern so cant you use a vq35 trans on a vg30 if you can the vq comes with hlsd stock and would probally be easier to source as alot of jdm vqs are arriving on the market but what do i know i just a newb maybe somebody with more maxima knowledge can shed some light i know the guys over on the sr20forum use spec v trannys on thier sentras but the have to change the bell housing the spec v also comes with hlsd as stated above
You could do what Cattman did and start your own group deal. Find out from Quaife how much it'll cost to make 20. Double that, and that's gonna be your retail "GD Discount" price. Ask for 50% deposit investment from interested members, pay Quaife, receive shipment, collect balance from members, ship to members. You'd essentially be getting a free Quaife in exchange for doing the legwork.
