So how do you hold up to the lightweight miatas? I can't remember, are you running stock final drive and gearing? I imagine the 240 does pretty well on short tight courses where short bursts of torque are handy?

Despite being the red headed stepchild of Nissan engines (and a little rough even in my '93 Altima) these can be pretty fun little engines where all out speed isn't needed...

I'm just a *hair* faster than a Spec Miata in a drag race. as long as we both nail the gas at the same time, I can out drag them to the next corner. problem is the car doesn't handle that well and I'm usually on junk tires so I can't put the power down as quickly as I want, so I wind up drafting them most of the time on the straights, and can't catch them in the corners.

With good tires (and a better driver), the car should be able to outrun the lead-pack spec miatas. I'm currently about 2 sec/min off the pace of the fast SM guys. Then again, the fast SM guys around here are all running up front at Nats, so there's some pretty stiff competition.

Yes, I'm still running stock gearing. I swapped a 4.6 in a couple races ago and the damn car went 3 sec a lap slower!! problem is 5th gear is sooo tall in the S14 tranny (0.83), the shorter FD required me to run in 5th gear on the straights, which is overall taller than the factory VLSD in 4th gear. so I lost speed by going to a shorter diff.

one of the common things for Production guys is to swap in the 0.90 5th gear from a hardbody and run that instead of the 0.83. that would be just about perfect for the tracks I run here, but the plan is to go to a dog box with custom gearing so I can get rid of the weaknesses of the factory synchro tranny.

Cool....one of the turbo Altima guys over at NC forums has a PAR gearset IIRC that a couple other members are trying to also purchase now. And another longtime member threw a Sunny GTi-R tranny (or at least the gearing, can't remember offhand) for better gearing...

Hopefully the grassroots KA guys will keep trying different things to continue getting the most out of the little iron lump lol...

BTW, I should've mentioned it's still impressive for a basic bolt on 240 and mild OEM cams to run w/Miatas that are at least a couple hundred lbs lighter. Hard to beat physics...FWIW, I remember (and still have) an Import Tuner issue that had a 240 in its Dynocell article and the 3 or 4 piece pulley set actually gained over 10whp...I always wanted to adapt it to my little Altima project but never found time...
