autozone and code reading

Stopped by my local autozone to have a code read. Came back as P0430 (***).
When the guy was done i asked if he cleared the code. He gave me this look as if he forgot, but said "i can't do it, its like a 10,000 dollar fine if i do it. i'm like really? are you serious?....Yes i am...um ok. and i drove off.

Never had this happen before, usually they will clear the code and often enough forget to tell me the actual code.
Has anybody heard of this happening? FWIW i'm located in ny maybe they passed some kind of law...who knows

Auto Zone employees are not supposed to clear the codes, some do but they are trained not to.
They are to simply offer a free diagnostic based on the codes recieved.

I went to Autozone to have them read the code on my 97. The guy tells me that its P0308 - misfire on cylinder 8. When I said that the engine is only 6 cylinders, he says that that's that code and I'll have to figure it out. I went home and crawled into the footwell and turned the screw on the ecu and got P1447 - evaporative emission control system.

Draw your own conclusions.

I've gotten my codes checked at Auto Zone here in Minneapolis and the first time I got a KS (I know you don't get CEL's from KS), EVAP, and EGR codes.

Second time I went I got KS and EGR codes.

If your that worried about the codes why not just spend the $ on a generic scan tool? I bought mine about 6 years ago it's obd2 and works on every car I've owned and all of the cars I do work on. You make your money back on it if you do side work

I have an advance 2 miles from my house and they do not care because they'll clear a code for me without even asking if I wanted it clear(after telling me what it is of course) I got tired of going back and forth so I purchased my own from amazon for $21.49

Another option, if you own an Android smartphone is an app called Torque. That with a $30 Bluetooth OBDII dongle, you can read and clear the codes from the phone. There's also a ton of real-time info you can pull as well. I believe the iPhone has a similar app too.

I live in MA and just visited Auto Zone with the CES light on. He ran the test and cleared the codes. After that I went to get an inspection and it wouldn't read it. I pretended I didn't know why. I wish they had not cleared them now that I know better because right after that things went downhill fast and now I have a P505 and those o2 codes are gone. P0420 and pending 0430 were cleared.
