One thing I've learned working on cars:

There's no such thing as budget brakes. Spend the extra few dollars to buy the higher quality stuff. It'll save you frustration in the long run.

Other than that, this site basically carries the same stuff Advance and AutoZone do...

For brake pads, I'd suggest to you to just walk into a store like autozone or pep boys and buy them because they give you lifetime warranty, so next time you need to do a brake job, just take in your worn pads and get new ones at no charge! The catch is that you not wear them down to the metal.

If you can afford it, get the ceramic pads - they are worth every penny of the higher cost.

thats the place where i purchased many parts before, also that's where I purchased my struts + mounts for my suspension for about $150 total 4 struts and 2 Gabriel front strut mounts.... so far about 10,000+ miles on the cheap strut set up and no problems ...
Also search for coupon codes online before you check out... usually saves you a few $$$

False... The lifetime warranty is only for manufacturer defects. Normal wear and tear does not apply. Pads are supposed to wear down over time.

On the other end of the spectrum, you may find a sales rep that's stupid/uninformed/improperly trained enough to honor such false warranty claims.

Not sure about your experience, but I've ALWAYS had Advance and Autozone replace my worn pads....it is NOT solely manufacturer defects. It is not solely getting the right representative. Pions and managers alike have replaced them without question. Didn't even need the receipt as long as they could find the purchase in the computer.

Back to OP, as already said, brakes is something you should not cheap out on unless you simply cannot afford anything better. Additionally, a good and proper break in will enhance your braking as well as lengthen their wear.

I was manager at an advance auto parts for a little over 2 years. I'm 100% positive that this is the policy. Those managers you delt with either didn't know the proper policies/procedures or just didn't care. At the end of the day, it is definitely the associate's own personal decision weather to replace a worn set or not. His paycheck won't go up or down based on it anyways so why should he care?

Either way, I'm not saying NOT to get them replaced this way if you can. By all means, use that person's lack of knowledge/responsibility to your advantage. I'm just putting this out there so that if someone reads this thread goes, out and tries to get their worn pads replaced under warranty and is denied, they know why. And if this does happen, just go to another location and try again.

I have had many, many sets of worn pads exchanged out for new ones at both Pep Boys and Autozone. Not once have they refused or even objected.

Nowadays they offer a number of different grades of pads - ranging from 1 year warranty to lifetime warranty. I think there's also some basic organic material to semi-metallic and ceramic.

You pretty much have to ask though. Although some reps will give you the options, others just pull out either the cheapest or the most expensive, and tell you that's your part. Make sure to ask about the specifics of the warranties as well.

Essential is correct...they are NOT SUPPOSED to be replaced under normal wear and tear...how does that make any sense? You'd never have to buy brake pads ever again!

Like he said tho, if the counterman replaces them then good for you. But im sick of customers coming to me and saying "i thought these had a lifetime warranty"... sorry.

Same here. Purchased the ceramic ones from Autozone, front and rear, and have exchanged them a couple of times already; no money out of my pocket yet.

The life time warranty is clearly stated on the Advance website, as are the exclusions.
Wear is NOT one of the exclusions.

True... This is because those garages will get the pads for as little as $5 - $10 in some cases after their garage discount. Labor of course is a bit more than that. So you end up paying for the replacement either way.

Or, they can also be getting them swapped out like what was discussed already which = pure profit for them.

Its not a LIFETIME WARRANTY. Its a limited lifetime warranty. Youre right, the website doesnt list wear as an exclusion, but it sure as hell doesnt list it as an inclusion either. Either way, i work there. I know the rules/policies, and we turn customers that want free brake pads away all day. My coworkers all clearly state that the warranty is not against normal wear and tear.

Seems clear enough to me.

"WHAT IS COVERED

We will, at our option, replace or refund your money for any part that we sell that fails during the warranty period. The replacement part will be warranted for 90 days from the date of exchange or the remainder of the warranty period, whichever is longer, subject to the conditions and exclusions in this warranty. If the original part should fail within 90 days from the date of purchase, you also may be reimbursed for your labor costs incurred in removing the defective part, up to a maximum rate of $45.00 per hour, provided:
  • You make a claim for your labor costs at the time you return the failed part to us.
  • Parts must be professionally installed by a garage or service center in order to qualify for labor reimbursement and receipts for labor must be printed on the garage or service center invoice or letterhead.
  • You provide us with a copy of your original installation invoice when you make your claim.
  • Self-installed units are not eligible for labor reimbursement.
  • The labor reimbursement rate is subject to change at any time without notice to you.
WHAT IS NOT COVERED

Warranty does not cover damage or failure resulting from:
  • Failure due to accident or collision
  • Improper installation of the part
  • Misuse, abuse, modification, vehicles used off-road or for racing purposes
  • Chemical fallout, tree sap, salt, hail, or other environmental conditions
  • Vehicles under manufacturer's recall for a related problem"

Regardless of what you think you see clearly (imo what you posted is clearly about defects and failures, it says that in the first sentence) if you get turned away next time you try to get free pads under warranty and theyre just worn down then dont be surprised. Plain and simple. If you do get pads, good for you. Even better.
