getting car repainted

I am having my entire car repainted...whats the best thing to do initially to take care of the paint? Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

Well first of all ask the paint job shop not to put any wax on the car before they give it back to you.

When it's back to it's home give it a quick wash since it wont be that dirty and you'll get rid of all the loose dirt the car collects on the drive back.

Dry the entire car and use which ever wax tickles your pickle. May I suggest using Klasse All In One (AIO) and Sealant Glaze). It is an acrylic formula that is more durable than wax and there are a few, like me here, who swear by it.

the guy who is painting my car said that he will buff the whole car when he is done. Why don't I just give him the wax that I want to use and let him put it on before I pick it up? I heard somewhere that I am supposed to wait 2 months for the paint to cure before I wax it? thanks for the help!

They will probably tell you not to wax the car for X number of days anyway so don't bother telling them not to wax it. Sometimes they'll apply something with some minor protection that'll feel like it's been waxed, but I say let them. I don't know if Klasse is bodyshop safe or breathable, but for liability reasons alone, let's say the paint starts clouding or something, I would not put anything on the paint for the amount of time they suggest. That way they cannot blame any defect on something you have done.

Your paint will be fine until the waiting period is over. Just keep it washed and clean.

No. You can't wax new paint. The body shop should tell you how long you have to wait before using any polish or wax on it...usually 30-45 days. The paint isn't fully cured when it comes out of the bodyshop, so you need to give it time to cure before you start aplying stuff to it. In the mean time I would just try to keep it reasonably clean. Once the time period has passed then go ahead and do whatever process you choose...

Mine, if you're curious, is Klasse AIO, One Grand Omega Glaze, then One grand Blitz wax. I am thinking about adding Klasse SG in there too next year though.

Tehcnically, you can wash the car after you pick it up from the shop.

As the others have mentioned, you need to let the paint cure 30-60 days before applying any kind of wax or sealant on it.

what should i wash it with? the terry towel put light scratches in the clear coat. Also I was planning on taking a long road trip, would it be a bad idea to put a bra on the car for the trip? Or should I maybe just get a rental and leave the car at home?

Hi, check out this thread: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....ight=sheepskin

I think bras are a mixed bag because they help protect against chips and bugs, but you also can't leave it on too long if it gets wet and dusty... I think. I don't have one.

I'd recomend a sheepskin mitt to wash the car. Also, some suggest only washing the car with cold water (no soap) until the paint is ready to be waxed. (BMW and Mercedes to be exact!) I read this in a car care book also (over 10 years ago) I used just cold water on that vehicle 10 years ago and it worked fine.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO, don't wax the car dude. I just got mine painted and the instructions are not to wax the car within 60-90 days. If you do wax the car you could cause permanent damage to the clear coat. You have to let the clear do it's stuff. So just wash it like the others have told you until about 2-3 months or so after the paint job then you have the all green to go and wax it up.

yea, i have seen how easily the clear coat scratches, would it be wise to put it in the booth and let it cure some more? I have access to a booth that I could use so that I could let the paint cure some more if it would help at all.

I was wondering....does not waxing also apply to those "Do-It-Yourself" Carwashes? The places where you take the hose and spray all that stuff to wash your car, including wax? Or is this just refering to basically just buffering?

YES, sheepskin is the best washing material used to wash a car. It's about $4... I have 3 total, just incase I need a backup.

check out the following site:

http://www.superiorcarcare.net/2in1washmitt.html

I bought a similiar, if not the same, mitt from Autozone for the aforementioned price. It is absolutely the best for clearning. Hope this helps.

They have microfiber wash mitts too. Those are actually softer than sheepskin. Make sure to wash with cool water in the shade. You can actually apply a glaze on the paint, but no wax or sealant for about two months.
